Legal regulation of ex situ biodiversity conservation
Hronová, Ivana ; Derlich, Stanislav (advisor) ; Damohorský, Milan (referee)
Legal regulation of ex situ biodiversity conservation Abstract This thesis focuses on the legal regulation of biodiversity conservation at international, European and mainly national level, in relation to ex situ conservation. The aim of the thesis is to introduce and provide an overview of the legal regulation of biodiversity conservation with a focus on ex situ protection of species of animals and plants. The secondary objectives of the thesis are de lege ferenda considerations in response to the identified shortcomings of the legal regulation in the Czech Republic, together with a comparison of selected provisions of the Slovak and Czech legal system. Overall, the thesis is intended to encourage reflection on the importance of biodiversity conservation and to focus attention on programmes, facilities and other methods of addressing ex situ protection. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first part deals with basic concepts such as biodiversity and its levels, or a more detailed definition of in situ and ex situ conservation. The global issue of species extinction and the overall loss of biodiversity is also discussed along with the importance of its conservation. The second part covers the sources of international and European law in the field of nature protection and care for biological...
Legal regulation of the operation of zoological and botanical gardens
Leš, Adam ; Damohorský, Milan (advisor) ; Derlich, Stanislav (referee)
Legal regulation of the operation of zoological and botanical gardens This thesis details the current state of the legal regulation of the operation of zoological and botanical gardens. Given the ever more pressing need to preserve the biodiversity of the natural environment, the role of zoological and botanical gardens is increasingly coming to the fore. The appropriate level of regulation should enable the operators of these facilities to make the most effective contribution to the conservation of endangered flora and fauna, subject to compliance with all legal conditions. Zoological and botanical gardens are significantly involved in ex-situ species conservation, i.e. outside the natural habitats of species, in particular by breeding endangered species in the most natural environment possible or by cultivating endangered plant species in order to protect the gene pool, and in-situ species conservation, i.e. directly in their natural habitat, by returning bred and reared endangered individuals back to the wild. The first part of the thesis provides the basic historical, social and conservation context of the existence of zoological and botanical gardens, and also introduces the most important organisations and associations that contribute in various ways to the achievement of the goals of...
Zoological and botanical gardens within their legal framework
Mouchová, Pavlína ; Damohorský, Milan (advisor) ; Derlich, Stanislav (referee)
Zoological and botanical gardens within their legal framework Zoological and botanical gardens date back to antiquity. Their long evolution has seen the relative importance of their functions change. Nowadays, zoological and botanical gardens fulfil a number of significant roles, with their contribution to endangered species protection and biodiversity conversation gradually having gained prominence. With the natural habitats of wild flora and fauna disappearing, it is zoological and botanical gardens that provide pro- tection by means of ex situ conversation, i.e., outside the natural habitat of these organisms. In the Czech Republic, zoos operate within a legal framework that consists primarily of Act No. 162/2003 Coll. on zoo regulation and amended acts, which implements the Coun- cil Directive 1999/22/EC of 29 March 1999 relating to the keeping of wild animals in zoos. The Act has introduced a licensing requirement for zoological gardens. It stipulates that zoos shall only be operated by a holder of a valid license granted in accordance with this Act by the Czech Ministry of the Environment. These days, there is a total of twenty-eight zoological gardens with a valid license. Unlike zoos, botanical gardens in the Czech Republic are, unfortunately, not regulated by a specific law. They operate...
Two faces of ZOO - perception of zoos from the view of their supporters and opponents
Tempírová, Lenka ; Trnka, Radek (advisor) ; Šusta, František (referee)
Two faces of ZOO Perception of zoos from the view of their supporters and opponents The main topic of this thesis is a role of zoological gardens in the modern society, especially their importance to conservation of biodiversity as well as to progress in public education. I was interested not only in the opinions and the attitudes of the supporters of zoological gardens, but also in views of their opponents as the opposite side. In the case of the opponents I wanted to reveal if their criticism of zoos is based on negative emotions (bad feeling from breeding animals in captivity and thinking about their rights to freedom) or rise from real inadequacies (for example bad living conditions of animals). So in the theoretical part of the thesis I was concerned about contributions of zoological gardens in many ways as well as about their limitations, mostly mentioned by their opponents. To be more precise in drawing conclusions I made my own empirical research which was based on questionnaires and interviews with directors of certain zoos in the Czech Republic. The main aim of my research was not only a usual opinion poll, but also a detection of differences in opinions and personal characteristics between supporters and opponents of zoos. I also wanted to find out which aspects of zoos are highly...

Zoo here and there: Observation of Visitor Behavior in the Prague and Reykjavík Zoos
Vysopal, Ondřej Věnek ; Stella, Marco (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
In my diploma thesis I deal with the perception of the modern zoological gardens by observing visitor behavior. The thesis captures the emergence of zoos in Europe in the late 18th and 19th century gardens and their role as a source of knowledge and as a representation of the relationship between man and animal. Based on the observations of visitors I present two European zoological gardens - Prague Zoo and Reykjavík Zoo & Family Park - as spaces reflecting a certain culture. Reykjavík as a place with a simple mission dedicated for the education of small children in several fields, not only in zoology, and Prague as a complex universe, a merge of several different places with different meanings, such as a place for education, relaxation, photographing, standing against the contemporary western critical theories of zoological gardens. Key words: Zoological gardens, visitors, animals, humans, culture, looking at animals, behavior of visitors, Reykjavík, Prague, Iceland
