Využitie dreva v histórii na príklade vybraného súboru výrobkov v pamiatkovej rezervácii Vlkolínec

This work discusses the use of wood in history through a sample of products found in the settlement Vlkolínec, UNESCO world heritage site, situated in Slovakia. At the same time, the work was complemented by dendrochronological dating of two selected farm buildings in this settlement. The aim of the work was to find out what types of wood were used to produce furniture, agrigultural facilities, home tools as well as windows and doors, and compare the results with literature. Wood was determined on the spot based on macroscopic features of wood. If it was not possible, samples were taken from the items and were identified in the laboratory using light microscope. Dating of the object was defined according to the standard dendrochonological methodology. Altogether, 397 samples of woods from 50 items which consited of 149 parts, in which it was distinguished between 17 different trees, 11 of which were deciduous, 4 coniferous and 2 shrubs. Most of the trees were spruce (95 samples), beech (79 samples), maple (60 samples) and ash (42 samples). The dendrochronological dating of the buildings goes back to the first half of the 20th century. It was also assessed that craftsmen in Vlkolínec used woods depending on their mechanical and physical properties or on the basis of woods available from the surrounding area.
