Application of generalized linear elastic fracture mechanics on estimation of crack propagation origin from sharp V-notch

The master thesis is focused on estimation of crack propagation origin from sharp V-notch. Stress distribution around the tip of the V-notch is described on the base of generalized linear elastic fracture mechanics. The change of the stress singularity exponent caused by geometry of the V-notch and the vertex singularity is taken into account. The first part of the work is devoted to the estimation of the stress singularity exponent of the V-notch either from stress distribution around the tip of the V-notch or by using analytical solution. Formerly derived stability criteria are applied in the second part of the work. The origin of the crack propagation is estimated for several experimental specimens. The aim of this thesis is to compare the available experimentally observed data with results obtained using those criteria based on the application of generalized linear elastic fracture mechanics developer at the Institute of Physics of Materials Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The finite element code Ansys and mathematical software Matlab were used for the necessary calculations.

The presented diploma thesis deals with the problem of determining the stress singularity exponent of the V-notch. This task can be divided into two parts. The first deals with the theoretical background, that means the basic relations of mechanics and the basic concepts of fracture mechanics. The second part deals with the elaboration of the Williams method and the creation of a program for calculating the stress singularity exponent.

This Ph.D. thesis was written under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Luboš Náhlík, Ph.D. and Assoc. The obtained results were used in the next part of the thesis, which deals with the issue of crack propagating in ceramic composites, where the stress distribution field is strongly influenced by the existence of material interface and presence of residual stresses, that arise during manufacturing process of composite.

Estimation of critical values for crack initiation from sharp V-notches

Abstract: The aim of the paper is to estimate a critical value of an applied stress for a crack initiation from sharp tip of the V-notch using a procedure based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LELM). The V-notch represents singular stress concentrator with the stress singularity exponent different from 0.5, therefore the generalized form of LELM for stress distribution description in the vicinity of the sharp V-notch was used. The stress singularity exponent depends on the V-notch opening angle, in general. A stability criterion based on the average value of the tangential stress component across a critical distance d from the V-notch tip is used in the paper. Resultant values of the critical applied stress are compared with experimental data.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the beginnings of crack propagation from sharp V-notches. Stress distribution around the tip of a V-notch is described on the basis of linear-elastic fracture mechanics. The V-notch is a singular stress concentrator with a singularity exponent dependent on the V-notch opening angle. The stability criteria are generalized for a stress singularity different from 0,5. Using FEM analysis the critical stress for crack initiation was estimated as a function of the V-notch angle. The results of numerical calculations were compared with experiments taken from the literature.

In the article is under assumptions of linear elastic fracture mechanics analyzed problem of the sharp V-notch with its tip on the bi-material interface, as a example of general stress concentrator. The procedure for the determination of stress singularity exponents is performed for general cases, when this exponent lies within the interval (0,1). The procedure for an estimation of the general stress intensity factor for considered configuration is shown too. Here is suggested method which consider both types of stress singularities which exist in this case.
