The implementation of lethal AI systems on the battlefield and its implication on warfare

This paper examines the role of lethal AI weapon systems on the battlefield and its implications for the classical concept of warfare developed by Carl von Clausewitz. Furthermore, it addresses the consequences that a proliferation of these systems can have on the current security orders. To examine both issues, my study uses a qualitative research design that consists out of two cases. My methodological approach uses a content analysis approach that is based on objective and subjective characteristics of each system. Moreover, I differentiate between airborne and ground-based systems. The results that I generated from this case study indicates only a weak effect of lethal autonomous weapon systems on the classical concept of warfare. These autonomous robotic systems rather enhance and modify the existing theory. A similar correlation can be found regarding the second research question that a proliferation of LAWS has also only a limited effect on current global security orders. Their effects are more of regional significance. Therefore, my study concludes that the effects of LAWS on the classical concept of warfare is marginal, likewise to the effects on global security structures. Framing of the situation in Mariupol in the news coverage of Novinky.cz, Blesk.cz and Deník.cz

This bachelor thesis examines the presentation of the siege of Mariupol on three Czech online news sites. A sample of 500 texts from the year 2022 was used to examine how the selected media framed the news about the situation in the city. This research was supplemented with findings from thematic narrative analysis and other examined variables, such as the topics of the texts or the actors quoted. The thesis is divided into three parts - theoretical, methodological, and analytical. The theoretical part introduces the concept of framing in news reporting and presents the general frames and thematic and episodic framing examined in the thesis. This part continues by introducing narrative in war coverage and reviewing narratives occurring in the media in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The methodological part introduces the quantitative and qualitative research methods used in this thesis, the studied news media, and the sample of texts. The analytical part of the paper then presents the results of the analysis, which indicate an anti-Russian position of all the media studied. NATO and European Security in the East: The Impact of the Ukraine-Russia Conflict on NATO Doctrine and Ukrainian Strategy

This diploma thesis will basically work with the concept of security, namely, the European secu- rity in recent years. Although Ukraine is not a NATO member, and Russia is NATO's distant neighbour, in this thesis I will prove that we should connect the events on Ukrainian border with European security. From the very onset of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, NATO was firm in its support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The Allies immediately condemned the illegal "legitimate annexation" of the Crimea to Russia in March 2014 and they have repeatedly stated that they would never recognize it as well. They also condemned deliberate destabilization in eastern Ukraine which was provoked by Russia with the use of its military intervention and militants' support. The crisis in Ukraine has proved to be a real turning point in Euro-Atlantic security since some senior Western politicians began to speak about changes in the guideline of European defense policy.
