The history and use of punctuation in the French language
Kollrossová, Petra ; Jančík, Jiří (advisor) ; Suková Vychopňová, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor's thesis will focus on the history and use of punctuation in the French language. The first part will explain what punctuation is and what its function is. Next, the punctuation marks used in the French language will be introduced. This will be followed by a section on the history of punctuation, specifically its origin and development up to the 21st century. It will be shown how the development of this system affected the development of texts and how it influenced authors and book printing. In the next part, I will specify its modern development and describe some specific elements that arose in it, especially thanks to the Internet. The next part will be devoted to the connection of punctuation with prosody and rhetoric, and the last part will introduce punctuation marks (for example, period, comma, question mark). In this section, the correct use of these signs, their use in the French language and the specific way in which they are written will be specified.

Adversative discourse connectives "however" and "instead" in academic texts
Valdajeva, Božena ; Brůhová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Vašků, Kateřina (referee)
The present study aims at discussing two connectives however and instead in academic texts. As the conjuncts are known to be rather free in their position, this study analyzes the interconnection of the possible position and other characteristics of the conjuncts i.e. the punctuation and co-occurrences. This thesis is a corpus based study. The corpus chosen for the analysis is the British National Corpus. The analysis itself is carried out on 100 examples, i.e. 50 examples of sentences containing however and 50 examples of sentences containing instead. The objective of this thesis is to examine the use of however and instead in the academic texts. In other words, it describes the usage of the two connectives as well as the possible tendencies that can be observed i.e. punctuation, co-occurrences. Individual sections of the analysis are based on the position of the conjuncts. Therefore a significant part of the analysis is dedicated to determining the position of the conjuncts based on the previously established position formulas. Further, punctuation and co-occurrences of conjuncts are analyzed as a follow-up to the position results. Key words: adversative conjuncts, however, instead, position, punctuation, co-occurrences
Punctuation in Italian language - rules and usage
Papayová, Tereza ; Špaček, Jiří (advisor) ; Štichauer, Pavel (referee)
The title of this thesis is Punctuation - rules and usage. Before we start the description of the punctuation and its rules, we devote a few pages to the historical development of punctuation marks, starting with dots at three different heights marking pauses in recited text at the beginning, through new style of punctuation established by Bembo and Manuzio, finishing with special forms of punctuation of the information age and on-line communication. For comparison I've included a short chapter describing the evolution of punctuation in Czech. The main source of information for this historical introduction was the book Storia della punteggiatura in Europa. The introduction is followed by a more detailed treatise on punctuation, its specific functions and its importance for the comprehension of written text. The section concerning the prosodic functions of punctuation will briefly discuss the problem of the relation between written and spoken language. The following section will describe the individual punctuation marks explaining their function and rules governing their usage according to grammars. Three different grammars were consulted as neither gives a comprehensive summary of punctuation rules and the fact that they use slightly inconsistent terminology. Apart from the grammars, I've derived...
