This bachelor's thesis focuses on female characters from the novels Hija de la fortuna and Retrato en sepia written by a Chilean author Isabel Allende. As one of the postboom period authors of the Hispano-American prose, Allende's work expresses signs of magical realism and feminism. This work analyzes the most important milestones in a woman's life and the perspective of the society regarding these milestones. The milestones are education, first period, first falling in love, first sexual intercourse, marriage, pregnancy, and work. These discussed topics are put into historical context of 19th and 20th century Chile, and into the context of the author's life, which had a great impact on her literary work. Emphasis is placed also on the position of women in Chilean society of the past and of today and on related topics.
