Polish Ethnic Community in Germany
Cimflová, Marcela ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Nieć, Grzegorz (referee)
This thesis deals with a Polish national group in Germany, Polonia, comprising about 2 million Poles and Germans with Polish origin. Polonia has a very well-developed organizational structure in Germany that takes care of Polish culture, language and traditions, as well as stands up for its rights listed in the Polish-German Treaty from the Polish-German Treaty of Good Neighborhood and Friendly Cooperation of 1991. Periodical roundtables and conferences that are crucial for the Polish-German dialogue show problems that the Polish group faces. There are asymmetries in the fulfilment of the Polish-German treaty of 1991, which guarantee the same rights for the Polish group in Germany as for the German minority in Poland: whereas the latter is officially recognized as a national minority in Poland, the former has not been awarded the minority status. Furthermore, there is a lack of funding in the case of Polonia, which prevents the effective functioning of Polish organizations, and the unsatisfactory level of teaching Polish at public schools. Author of the thesis comes to the conclusion that although the Polish national group is not a de jure recognized national minority, it de facto has the rights that are commonly attributed to a national minority. Moreover, the analysis showed that the Poles are...

Denková, Adéla ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
Bachelor thesis "The Media Image of the Centre Against Expulsions in Polish and Czech Daily Newspapers in the Years 2003 and 2004" deals with a comparison of four Polish and Czech daily newspapers and their approach to the subject of the Centre Against Expulsion which is an institution initiated by the German Federation of Expellees. In the first part the thesis treats the circumstances leading to the creation of a foundation which is supposed to promote the idea of the Centre and describes the debate that was started about this issue. The merits of the thesis are based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the dailies Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta Wyborcza, Právo and Mladá fronta DNES. By this analysis the thesis monitors how much space the newspapers devoted to the topic, to which opinions they gave a chance to be heard and what was their attitude to the question. It also deals with the chosen lexis and other categories that can show the approach to the issue. On this basis the thesis compares the Polish and Czech newspapers. As the thesis presumes that media production is interacted with the society's concern about a certain topic, the authoress of this paper tries to relate the results of her research to the attitude of Polish and Czech society to the Centre Against Expulsions. She attempts to...

This work is based on the analysis of media image of the occupation of Czechoslovakia by troops of the Warsaw Pact in contemporary Polish press with focus on the role of the Polish army. The purpose of this work is to assess used media discourse of Polish communist newspapers which were informing about these events with focus on elements of propaganda, which were typical for the 60's in the Eastern Bloc countries. At the same time there is a comparison to media discourse of Polish emigration press in the United States. In the beginning, I will describe basic sources and literature and present results of research on topics such as the Prague Spring, Operation Danube and elements of newspeak. The theoretical part of this thesis begins with the context of historical progress which leads to the Prague Spring and Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia afterwards. The practical part of this thesis is dedicated to the analysis of selected articles from newspapers such as Życie Warszawy, Żołnierz Wolności and Słowo Polskie. These articles are confronted with texts from Chicago's Dziennik Związkowy. I will summarize these findings in the final chapter. Key words...
