Homosexuality in the Age of Oscar Wilde

The introductory part of this bachelor 's attempts to outline the historical context of the times that preceded the Victorian era. Homosexuality in ancient Greece and in Czech lands is explored in the first chapter. This chapter also deals with the evolution of definition of sexual scandal in different times. In the following chapter, the attention is paid to an English educational system, which shaped society to a large extent. It highlights the fact that homosexual activities were performed by young students, who were to become a future elite of British society. Three important scholars are also mentioned in this chapter, John A. Symonds, Edward Carpenter, and Havelock Ellis. The last two chapters deal with homosexuality in Victoria England and its empire, with Oscar Wilde trials and places certain elements in context of more liberal France, where Oscar Wilde fled.

Humour in the Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde

This bachelor thesis examines the use of humour in the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde, which is usually overlooked in these texts. The theoretical part based on secondary sources introduces the author and his output in the context of the authored fairy tale genre and its contemporary literary works. It describes different kinds of humour and comic with regard to their use in children's literature and their use in the works of Oscar Wilde. The practical part focuses on Wilde's fairy tales, where it localizes and describes the elements of humour and comic used and analyses selected parts of the text.

Double life in Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and the author's life

The bachelor thesis focuses on the concept of double life, concretely found in Oscar Wilde's life and one of his works - The Picture of Dorian Gray. The aim is to provide an understanding of duality in author's life and in the selected novel and show the connection between them. The first part of the thesis presents Wilde's life with the focus on the duality. His duality can be noticed mainly through leading two relationships at once. There are also shown the difficulties of leading a double life in this section. The second part analyses the types of dualities of the three main characters from the novel, with the main focus on the protagonist Dorian Gray. The different types of dualities are presented through Basil's homosexuality, Lord Henry's public image that differs from his secret desires, and lastly through the fight of the body and soul in the case of Dorian. The duality of Dorian is even supported by the existence of the portrait. Further, the thesis discusses the Dorian's development and how certain people could influence who he has become, including his grandfather Lord Kelso and Lord Henry Wotton.

Traditional Czech and British Fairy Tales - The Most Obvious Analogies

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to demonstrate whether Czech and British fairy tales evince analogies in terms of motifs and narratological structure. The theoretical part explains the origin of fairy tales in both countries and presents definitions of a traditional fairy tale and its main functions. The practical part begins with an analysis of an individual style of writing of the authors Božena Němcová, Karel Jaromír Erben, Joseph Jacobs and Oscar Wilde who are considered to be the main representatives of traditional fairy tales and thus their works enable a more thorough comparison. Subsequently, the author has paid attention to the analysis of traditional fairy tales of both literatures. In addition to their identical features, the comparison has also shown a number of discrepancies. Importance of being an Earnest translator

MA thesis - Daniela Cvachová - 2011 Abstract: This thesis compares two Czech translations of the drama The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. The comparison is based on findings of currently recognised theoreticians of translation (Levý, Knittlová, Králová, Reiss). The translation of Jiří Zdeněk Novák is half a century older than the translation by a team of young beginning translators led by Stanislav Rubáš and Zuzana Šťastná. The thesis focuses on the comparison of those aspects that are characteristic for Wilde's works and difficult for translators: lexicological problems like puns, bon mots, allusions to realia. In spite of the fact that the drama is not of a large extent, it offers a wide range of "tough nuts to crack" like that.

Technology of morbid in fairy tales

(in English): The diploma thesis deals with the specific conception of body and corporeality in fairy tales, especially with morbid elements which are often reflected as non-fairy tale. The fairy tales of Karel Jaromír Erben, Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde are the main focus. The thesis also introduces the theory of the Swiss scholar Max Lüthi formulated in The European Folktale: Form and Nature into the Czech context. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical section provides a complex explication of Max Lüthi's theory of the fairy tale. It examines the main terms that Luthi defined for the fairy tale: One-dimensionality, Depthlessness, Abstract Style, Isolation and Universal Interconnection, Sublimation and All-Inclusiveness. Then the frame of this theory is extended into the field of the authorial fairy tale. The diploma thesis then sums up the differences and the points of contact between those two subgenres using The Story of the Eldest Princess as an example. The practical part focuses on relevant strategies of handling the body and corporeality in fairy tales. Polarities in the Works of Oscar Wilde

Reading through the works of Oscar Wilde, one soon notices the many instances of polarity: the recurring themes of the body versus soul, good versus evil, city versus nature, artificial versus natural and many more. It is to be found in his plays as well as in his prose and fairy- tales. Yet these polarities do not necessarily have to oppose each other: the Wildean dialectic allows contraries to coexist, and thus we have the Star-Child who, through repentance, turns from evil to good; however this turn of character does not ensure a happy-ending, and makes us question whether "good really is good". A great number of Wilde's characters either live a double-life, have two distinct sides to their personality, or even several personalities, and in the case of Dorian Gray the split is literal. What led the author to constantly toy with this motif is a question worth examining. In Wilde's case, the artist's life cannot be entirely separated from his works since so much of what he was and what formed him is reflected in the texts he wrote. His statement that "what people call insincerity is simply a method by which we can multiply our personalities" (Ransome, 162) shows that for Wilde, truth was not the opposite of "lie", but there may have been several different versions of truth. Key Motifs in Oscar Wilde's and H. C. Andersen's Fairy Tales

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the key motifs appearing in the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde and Hans Christian Andersen. The theoretical part focuses on the characterization of fairy tale and the motifs that define works of both authors in the field of children´s literature. Further, the work introduces both authors and their work and tries to define H. Ch. Andersen´s impact on children´s Victorian literature and integrate works of Oscar Wilde into the context of Victorian prose. The core of the work constitutes the analysis of the selected motifs in Andersen´s and Wilde´s fairy tales with regard to religion (motif of good and evil, motif of repentance, motif of love and motif of sacrifice). In the end the thesis tries to define common features and motifs in the fairy tales of both authors, and it mentions Andersen´s impact on the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde.

Arthur Breisky and Oscar Wilde: Criticism, Mask, Mystification

The thesis is devoted to the following two representatives of literal decadence, Oscar Wilde, British dramatist, prose writer, poet and essayist, and Arthur Breisky, Czech prose writer, literary critic and translator. The thesis opens with providing a basic insight into the life and work of both authors. They were both influenced by decadence, which was not only an artistic trend, but also a specific spirit of the time that was reflected in the psychological and social roots and opinions of both authors. The thesis works with the basic assumption that the Czech decadent Breisky was significantly influenced by Wilde in his opinions and activities. The thesis sets up three areas to explore that mingle and influence each other: criticism, masque and mystification. The main similarities between Wilde and Breisky are analyzed in the thesis. Based on the comparison of individual motives, it is possible to trace how Breisky builds on Wilde's ideas and what, on the other hand, he invents newly or differently. Apart from the comparison of both authors, the thesis also provides a comprehensive overview of Breisky's opinions on literature and art at the theoretical level.
