The death of ice-hockey player Luděk Čajka as reported in chosen periodicals

This bachelor's thesis deals with the tragic death of ice-hockey player Luděk Čajka and especially with media coverage of this incident. Čajka was a talented defender playing for the Czechoslovak club TJ Gottwaldov (TJ Zlín since 1990). His up-and-coming career was interrupted in January 1990 during a league game in Košice when he was injured after slipping on the ice and crashing into the boards behind the goal. His fatal neck injury led to his death in hospital forty days later. This bachelor's thesis aims to find out how Czechoslovak printed media reported about the whole case. Three newspapers were chosen for the study - The Mladá fronta (nationwide general daily), The Československý sport (nationwide sports daily) and The Naše pravda (local general periodical). The contents of all of these newspapers were analysed and after that the ascertained results were compared among themselves. The thesis is made up of three main chapters. The first one focuses on Čajka's career, on the fateful game in Košice as well as later events and also mentions a similar, more than forty years older, accident of Czechoslovak ice-hockey player Vladislav Müller.
