Soil carbon sequestration: ways and potential
Valentová, Mariana ; Vindušková, Olga (advisor) ; Bartuška, Martin (referee)
By choosing appropriate practices, carbon can be stored in the soil as a means of mitigating (mitigating) climate change. The paper clearly summarize our current understanding of the principles (e.g., soil organic matter, level of C saturation) anf factors (e.g., parent rocks, climate, human) influencing the potential of soils to sequester carbon and its importance in terms of implemeting effective mitigation measures. This is followed by an introduction of method for estimating the carbon sequestration capacity of soils and its relevance to sequestration potential is discussed. The main focus of the paper is the comparison of the land use changes (e.g., forest or peatlands restoration) and land management (e.g., use of crops rotation, no-till agriculture) that can achieve soil carbon sequestration, including the quantitative estimates of their sequestration potential. Finally, there is summary of the estimates of global sequestration potential of soils. Key words: carbon, soil, sequestration, mitigation, climate change, land-use, soil capacity
Změny v krajině českého pohraničí
Košťál, Lukáš
This diploma thesis maps the changes in the landscape of the Czech border zone since 1945. The landscape and its perception is defined and landscape changes in the context of historic events affecting the landscape the strongest way are also described within the terms of literary research. The goal of this work was to identify specific changes in the cultural landscape of at least one selected locality on the Czech and Austrian sides of the border zone over a period of 50 - 70 years, to evaluate and compare them from the landuse point of view, and also describe cultural, demographic and historic changes. The locality on the Czech side is represented by the Nový Bystřice cadastral area and by the town of Litschau cadastral area on the Austrian side. The comparative analysis was used in the empirical section where both localities were compared by using available historic data. The questionnaire survey method targeted on Czech inhabitants of the border zone and their relationship to the landscape and their Austrian neighbours was also used. The semi-standardised interview method described landscape sen-timent, which differed between Czech and Austrian respondents. The work also included a SWOT analysis reporting strong sides and risk factors for both the examined localities. The results confirmed a significant change in the landscape of the Czech borderland, mainly due to the political situation and the different priorities of the previous government management mode, which basicly separated man from the countryside, whereas the Austrian side contin-ued its natural evolution in democratic conditions. Czech territory was approached in 1989 by Austrian model, but to set the balance in the landscape will take years.
Changes of landscape structure in the different landscape types
Lebduška, Lukáš ; Romportl, Dušan (advisor) ; Chuman, Tomáš (referee)
Landscape structure is affected by combination of human and natural influences. Changes, which took place in landscape structure of Czechia depends on degree and intensity of human influence in different types of landscape. This work was devoted to problematics of landscape structure changes, which took place between years 1950 and 2018, and how did they affected the landscape microstructure and land cover in different landscape types. These changes were computed in model location of 1x1 km in size, set by random selection in landscape types. These model locations were compared based on aerial photography from fifties of twentieth century and from year 2018, and on their basis were computed landscape metrics and analysed land cover. The changes which took place in these locations were the compared. The calculations had proved the difference in change of landscape structure, especially by homogenization of landscape. In these changes are evident differences, specific for each landscape type. Keywords: landscape structure, landscape heterogeneity, land-use, landscape metrics, change of landscape
Forgotten Sudetenland.
KOVAŘÍK, Michal
This diploma thesis describes Sudetenland in environmental, economic and sociological view. The main question of this research is if Sudetenland still exist as a marginal area. The theoretical part contains a summary of basic terms, for example amenity migration, a plan of development of a municipality and a coefficient of the ecological stability (KES). It also contains explanation of the word "Sudetenland" as a geographical, socio-economic and histroric-political term and so on the historical consequences, which influenced Sudetenland. The practical part of this diploma thesis is focused on observation the socio-economic behaviour of inhabitants of particular part of the Sudetenland, village Celnice and on a calculation of KES of its cadastral area. This thesis is designed as a case study. It considers the amenity migration as a solution of some socio-economic problems of this area.
Changes of rainfall-runoff regime in the Šumava/Bohemian Forest region
Fiala, Ondřej ; Kliment, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Matoušková, Milada (referee)
CHANGES OF RAINFALL-RUNOFF REGIME IN THE ŠUMAVA / BOHEMIAN FOREST REGION Abstract: The goal of this thesis is the evaluation of changes in rainfall-runoff regime in the Šumava region from time and spacial point of view. The thesis includes research and applied part. The research part is dedicated to the methods of evaluation of runoff changes and their possible causes in the Šumava region. In the applied part there is an analysis of precipitaion - runoff regime for long-term time series of average annual and monthly discharges and also annual and monthly precipitations for selected gauging stations in Czech, German and Austrian part of Šumava using absolute and relative homogenity tests and Mann - Kendall test for long-term trend. The results of this thesis showed significant changes in rainfall and runoff seasonality. One of the main aims of this thesis is the identification of possible orographical effect or the difference between windward and leeward part of Šumava. In conclusion the achieved results are evaluated, discussed and compared with subject publications. Key words: absolute homogeneity, land-use, Mann - Kendall test, runoff, basin, discharge, relative homogeneity, season, precipitation, trend, Šumava
TREELINE DYNAMIC IN THE MT. KRALICKÝ SNĚŽNÍK
Kolář, Václav ; Treml, Václav (advisor) ; Šenfelder, Martin (referee)
Treeline dynamic in the Mt. Kralický Sněžník Abstract Changes in treeline positions have been recorded both in the mountains of Central Europe and worldwide. The treeline upward shifts have been recently influenced particularly by rising temperature and reduced human impacts in the highest parts of the mountains. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate dynamics of treeline in the Mt. Kralický Sněžník and to determine influencing factors. Dendrochronological methods were employed to determine age structure of spruce across the ecotone and the analysis of aerial images was used to identify changes of spruce coverage between 1936 and 2014. I found that tree age is decreasing with increasing elevation - an evidence of advancing treeline. Treeline upward advance indicated by a gradual densification of spruce stands was also detected from aerial images. Seedling abundance is negatively affected by dense mats of blueberry in the upper part of ecotone. Mortality of spruce is rising with increasing elevation, which indicates the negative influence of extreme climatic conditions in the uppermost parts of ecotone. Age structures and aerial images show that the treeline advance in the Mt. Kralický Sněžník was caused by a combination of land abandonment at the end of 19th century supplemented by afforestation in the lower...
Přirozená retence vody v krajině versus výstavba retenčních nádrží
SEDLÁČEK, Jan
This work is focused on natural water retention in landscape. There are described basic principles of water behaviour in soil, comparing of water retention in different types of land-use and anthropogenic influences including flood-protection and land-use changes. In the practicle part, there is described an experiment which focuses on comparing of retention potential of land-use changes in catchment of water dam Orlík with retention capacity of the dam. This work includes GIS analysis which focuses on areas of each type of land-use in the Orlík catchment.

IMPRINTS OF HISTORY IN POST-AGRICULTURAL FORESTS Ph.D. Thesis Jaroslav Vojta Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Science Praha, 2010 Promotor: Ivan Suchara List of original papers I. Relative importance of historical and natural factors influencing vegetation of secondary forests in abandoned villages (Jaroslav Vojta - Preslia 79: 223-244) II. Land use legacies in post-agricultural forests in the Doupovské Mountains, Czech Republic (Martin Kopecký & Jaroslav Vojta - Applied Vegetation Science 12: 251-260) III. Woody vegetation continuity, topography, and distance to ancient forests have complex effects on the vegetation and species richness of abandoned pastures (Lucie Drhovská & Jaroslav Vojta - submitted) 1 Introduction Land use changes have had a profound effect on vegetation cover. Often, succession results in the recovery of forests on former agricultural land. As areas of post-agricultural forests become increasingly prominent in landscapes of developed countries, these processes have attracted the attention of ecologists. Many questions have arisen regarding the possibility of restoring original forest communities on former agricultural lands (Flinn and Vellend, 2005; Hermy and Verheyen, 2007). At the same time, current and past land use changes could be seen as "natural experiments" that could...
