History of the Congregation of Sister of Mercy of St. Boromeo and of its actvities in the territory of Prague

It is a historically descriptive bachelor thesis, which briefly describes the history of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo. The paper documents the establishment of the Congregation in the 17th century in France, the arrival of the first nuns to the Czech lands and first years of their work in our country. Elaborately is described the origin and development of the Hospital of Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo and of the first motherhouse of the Congregation in Bohemia which was once an integral part of the hospital. Equally thoroughly pay thesis attention to the monastery in Praha 6 - Řepy, which was also founded by the Congregation and where used to be an orphanage, a prison for women and an institute for oligofrenics. Vividly portrayed are the activities of the Congregation during the Second World War and its destiny after the communist takeover in 1948. For completeness is also mentioned history after the 1989 and current activities of nuns in the Czech Republic. At the end of the paper is described the functioning of the nursing school run by the Congregation during the time period from 1939 to1952. For better context is this chapter preceded by a description of the history of nursing education in the Czech from the 19th to mid-20th century.

This thesis describes the formation of religious communities (orders, congregations) and their development in the world and in our country. They are described with a view to their charitable activities. It further deals with the persecution of the church in general and the persecution and the life of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo with regard to Prague in the period of 1945-1989. This section is divided into six particular periods according to the importance of the influence of the state on the activities of the church and the Congregation. Each of these periods is divided into two parts. The first part illustrates the development of the relationship between the state and the church generally. The second part describes the relationship between the state and womens` orders and with the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo in particular. The thesis utilizes relevant literature and archives. Archival documents come from the National Archives in Prague, mostly from the funds of the State Agency for Religious Affairs, the Military Historical Archives and the archives of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo in Prague. The thesis is closed with some thoughts of the role of religious communities in today's world. Key words...
Activity of the Congregation of Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo in České Budějovice. The lifestory of a black and white flower of the city

The dissertation deals with the historical activities of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo in České Budějovice between the years 1850 - 1956. The thesis is especially based on the study of archival materials. Each chapter comprehensively describes the history of the three branches where the religious Sisters performed their activities. The branches are listed in chronological order of when they were established in the city. A public hospital is mentioned first, followed by an institutional complex of orphanages and schools at the former Vienna gate, and the group is concluded with an asylum for elderly people in need established in 1888. Particular attention is paid to the circumstances concerning the establishment of each branch, its background, ordinary and extraordinary days that were mostly mentioned in local chronicles; and two local superiors who had a major impact on the development and character of the community are also mentioned in the dissertation. Besides the observation of the beginnings and subsequent unprecedented development of community activities within the city frame, the text also includes an independent final chapter focused on events associated with the definitive end after the year 1948. Everyday life of (female) prisoners in the Monastery of Řepy in the 1930s and 1940s

The aim of this thesis is to provide insight into the lifes and stories of female prisoners kept in the convent of Congregation of Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo in Prague's Řepy, at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. The thesis consists of analysis of the prisoners, based on their nationality, social position, type of crime, length of sentence, and religion. Another focus is on the aims of the prison, educational means applied on women, and the respect of the prisoners to these means and the staff as such. The thesis describes everyday life in the convent, including activities done by the prisoners. It follows the behavior of the residents, their mutual relationships, the hierarchy between the women and the process of dealing with each other.

The study consists of socially-charitable work of the congregation of Sisters of Mercy of Charles Boromejsky within the region of České Budejovice diocese up to the year 1950. In introduction, the study generally describes national charitable work within the country, various churches and voluntary organisations from the middle ages up to the beginning of the 20th century. Further, the study introduces the foundation of the congregation as well as the arrival of Sister of Mercy to the Czech country. The main body of the study consists of a description of their influence to the health and social facilities. Attention is given to the two types of care facilities, particularly to hospitals and care homes. In conclusion, the study is attending to the activities in Charitable home and Small hospital in the Convent of Albrechtice.
