The life and work of Antonín Jan Jungmann

This bachelor thesis deals with the life of the Czech physician and obstetrician Antonín Jan Jungmann. The thesis is divided into three main chapters, each of them focuses on a certain field in which Jungmann has reached considerable importance. The first chapter presents a brief biography, where information about Jungmann's childhood, his studies, ennoblement, and retirement will be portrayed. The two following chapters are case studies concerning two fields of Jungmann's importance, his obstetrics career, and his role in the Czech national revival. The second chapter focuses on his appointment in the position of professor of theoretical and practical obstetrics and related issues concerning his teaching methods. The attention will be paid especially to the educating of midwives. The third chapter deals with Jungmann's position in the process of the Czech national revival. Issues concerning his role in the first debates about the Manuscripts of Dvůr Králové and Zelená Hora and authorship of the Czech-German Dictionary, on which he worked with his older brother Josef Jungmann, will be presented.
