Šatná, Barbora ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The bachelor's thesis "The Death of Jan Masaryk" in the periodical press deals with how selected media reported on the person and death of Jan Masaryk in the period from February 25 to March 31, 1948. Specifically, these are the dailies Rudé právo and Svobodné noviny (known as Lidové noviny) . But first, he deals with the person and important events in the life of Jan Masaryk. Subsequently, it presents a brief history of both dailies. He then deals with the analysis of articles in both periodicals. The researched texts could be divided into two periods: first, before Masaryk's death and the second, the days after his death. In the first period, the dailies did not pay much attention to Jan Masaryk. They rarely wrote about him, mostly in connection with forming a new government, of which he became a member. In the second period, the number of texts mentioning his name grew significantly. The most common topic was Masaryk's funeral, first its organization, then its course and Masaryk's interview for the French daily L'ordre, from which both dailies quoted very often. At that time, it was a turning point in Czechoslovakia when non-communist ministers resigned, and Klement Gottwald began to form a government in which the Communists prevailed. At that time, the Communists also controlled print media...
Online film reviews of a biographical movie Masaryk and users' comments in Česko-Slovenská filmová databáze
Černovský, Marek ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The bachelor's work "Internet reviews of a biographical film Masaryk and users' online comments in Česko-Slovenská filmová databáze" depicts and analyses a biographical and historical film Masaryk both with users' online comments in Česko-Slovenská filmová database (CSFD.cz) and reviews, especially on the websites MovieZone.cz, Filmová databáze (FDb.cz), Kinobox.cz, and Filmserver.cz. Comparing all the comments and reviews, the characteristic features of the film as well as its specifics in terms of biographical genre are demonstrated. The work also compares the film's plot with real events as they actually occurred. A theoretical part precedes the analysis so it can have a factual basis. The work characterises film as a dramatic art, specifies a biographical genre as a whole and describes the evolution of a Czech film criticism, including its transition from printed to online form. Attention is also given to Jan Masaryk himself - his persona, career and legacy. Quantitative research shows how well today's Czech public knows Jan Masaryk and events depicted in the film.
Jan Masaryk as radio commentator in wartime BBC
Dvořáková, Anna ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on Czechoslovak radio broadcasting on BBC from September 1939 (when the separate Czech program started there) to the end of World War II in which there were participating political representatives of Czechoslovakia after partial recognition of Czechoslovak government in the exile by the British government in summer of 1940. Main theme of the thesis are the radio speeches of Jan Masaryk, the former (longtime) Czechoslovak ambassador in London and future Minister of Foreign Affairs of the exile government. He launched the Czech Programme of BBC for listeners in the Protectorate on 8th September 1939 and began to appear on the waves regularly once a week in February 1940. The thesis analyzes how he tried (in his speeches and comments) to encourage self-confidence of the nation, how he tried to nullify germanization endeavors of occupiers and quislings to reinterpret Czech historical narrative and by usage of what ideological weapons he was creating the image of small, but internally strong and mature Czechoslovak nation, morally exceeding its inherent German enemy. He used this story as a rhetorical shield against the Nazi interpretation of the Czech tribe, who returned to the womb of the modern Holy Roman Empire, where it belongs as natural part - by the words of the Nazi propaganda.
