Thematics of madness in the tales of Guy de Maupassant

The main aim of this bachelor's thesis is to determine by which literary means Guy de Maupassant (1850 1893) portrays the theme of madness in his tales. This theme is associated with the genre of fantastic novel in the 19th century, but also with his own life. At the beginning, his life and his literary creation are presented. Then it is focused on the genre of the fantastic tales and novellas. The most important part of this thesis is the analysis of the selected texts which contain the element of madness. This analysis identifies motives typical for the characters, settings and plots of the selected texts. The obtained knowledge is summarised in the conclusion of the thesis. The whole thesis is written in French.

Lenka Mundevová Translation of Colloquial Language Devices in Fiction: A Century of Maupassant's Ivrogne in Czech Translation Abstract The dissertation compares the stylization of the dialogues in the French original of Maupassant's short story Ivrogne (The Drunkard), written in 1884, with five Czech translations published between 1902 and 1997. The comparative analysis is focused on the devices of colloquial language, including dialect, which appear frequently in the dialogues of the story and prove to be extraordinarily useful when interpreting Maupassant's text. The analysis of the excerpted material is preceded by the description of the basic characteristics of colloquial French and Czech, followed by the description of their stratifications. The mutual relation of the colloquial language varieties is an important prerequisite for the evaluation of the translations of colloquial language devices and their appropriateness in the individual Czech versions of Ivrogne. The paper also deals with the development of Czech aesthetic translation standards and their relation to the standard of local fiction, outlining the important tendencies of Czech fiction translation applied when colloquial devices were conveyed from French to Czech during the specified timeframe. This thesis focuses on presenting Guy de Maupassant, a French writer of the second half of the 19th century, as a playwriter. The main objective of the thesis is to disclose the dramatic tendencies of the writer, who is primarily known for his prose, and to present all the seven completed dramatic pieces which are often neglected in favour of his more famous work. The thesis aims to showcase the nature and the position of the plays in the context of Guy de Maupassant´s whole work and their overall perception. It attempts to explain the author´s specific approach through describing the social and historical atmosphere, literary and theatre movements in the second half of the 19th century and through analysis of the plays themselves. Based on these the thesis offers a way how to fully perceive de Maupassant´s plays. Of significant importance are the selected quotations of textes of the plays. Finally the thesis presents the common signs of the plays and tries to discover the initial intention of their creation, the author´s approach to the genre and the reason why they last unknown in general.
