The influence of multiculturalism on contemporary Dutch children's literature

The thesis aims to investigate to what extent and how is the multicultural society reflected in contemporary Dutch children's literature and how the authors deal with the issue of multiculturalism. The theoretical part explains important terms and describes the current social situation in the Netherlands. Than follows an overview of the evolution of immigration to the Netherlands and an analysis of topics related to multicultural problematics. At the end of theoretical part is briefly described the concept of children's literature and defined the area of the research. The practical section first describes the methodology that is followed by an analysis of eight books. The results part discusses the findings of the research.

The contemporary Dutch rural novel

in English This bachelor thesis deals with the contemporary Dutch rural novel. The main questions are: 1. What features characteristic of the Dutch rural novel can be found in the more recent novels Joe Speedboot (2005) by Tommy Wieringa (in English Joe Speedboat, 2010) and Boven is het stil (2006) by Gerbrand Bakker, (in English The Twin, 2008)? a) Are the characteristic features, as described in Dutch literary history books and glossaries of literary terms, present in the analysed books? b) Have the analysed books characteristics attributed to them by the article of literary critic Xandra Schutte? c) Can we identify any other characteristic features? Can we speak of a new tradition of the contemporary Dutch rural novel? The theoretical part is concerned with classification of Dutch rural novel in the literary and historical context. In this part the Dutch rural novel is defined and the characteristic are also mentioned. The theoretical part continues with a summary of the development of Dutch rural novel from its beginning to the present day. The corpus consists of two contemporary Dutch rural novels - Joe Speedboot by Tommy Wieringa and Boven is het stil by Gerbrand Bakker. They are analysed using the structural analysis. This thesis focuses on Olga Krijtova (1931-2013), an important figure in the academic field of Dutch studies in the Czech Republic and a prolific translator of Dutch literature into Czech language. She played a major role in introducing Dutch literature to the Czech cultural context and the thesis focuses on examining the influence of communist ideology and her own literary taste and preferences on her translations, which have deeply influenced the whole image of Dutch literature in the Czech culture. These aspects are examined by analysing her peritexts, several translations and epitexts, all of which shed further light on the nature of Krijtova's contributions to the image of Dutch literature in the Czech culture. Gender Aspects in the Novel Eva by Carry van Bruggen

in English This thesis focuses on the construct of gender in the modernist novel Eva by the Dutch authoress Carry van Bruggen in relation to the individual human subject. The goal of this thesis is to analyse how is gender constructed in the book and how this construct influences the psychic development and decision making of the main character, a woman named Eva. The answer to the main research question What role does the construct of gender play in the life of the main character of the novel Eva? was reached with the help of the discourse analysis, namely the post-structuralist discourse analysis using the deconstructive reading. The thesis is at the same time theoretically anchored in the post-structuralist feminist literary criticism. The theoretical part therefore draws on the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Judith Baxter and Judith Butler. As an inspiration for the discourse analysis itself served the discourse analysis dealing with the gender identity that was carried out by Kateřina Zábrodská in 2009. The first step in the analysis stage was to identify the relevant passages of the novel that inform what does it mean to be a man or a woman. Czech migrant writers in the Dutch literature

in English: Keywords: literary analysis, imagology, Czech migrant writers, Dutch literature, Jana Beranová, Jan Stavinoha The diploma thesis aims to explore the portrayal of Czech characters and the Czechoslovakia in Dutch-language works written by authors of Czech origin, namely in selected novels by Jana Beranová and Jan Stavinoha. The principal research questions are: 1. What motifs typical of migrant literature might be identified in the analysed novels? 2. How are the Czech characters portrayed? 3. How is the Czechoslovakia portrayed? Is the portrayal of the country of origin contrasted with that of the country of arrival, i.e. the Netherlands? The theoretical framework of the diploma thesis focuses on Dutch migrant literature and socio-political environment in Czechoslovakia from 1945 until present. The method used in the thesis is based on imagology and structural analysis. The practical part provides an analysis of the novels Nu delen we een geheim (1992) by Jana Beranová and In goede handen (1984) by Jan Stavinoha. Semantic and stylistic shifts in second-hand translations (based on examples of Dutch books translated into Czech via German translations)

(in English): This Thesis deals with the phenomenon of indirect translation. Since indirect translation is still relatively common in the Czech culture, but at the same time rather understudied, the aim of this Thesis is to describe the phenomenon in more detail and with the help of an actual text analysis to investigate the influence this method has on the final translation. Two texts were chosen for the analysis, both written by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, being a characteristic sample of the bibliography of Czech indirect translations of Dutch written works. Compiling this bibliography was one of the tasks of this Thesis. It documents the extent to which indirect translation was used in past and present, and it also shows what kind of texts are most likely to be translated indirectly. Finally, the chosen texts were reduced (using sample method) to fragments that were then analysed in terms of stylistic and semantic shifts. According to the analysis the most common shifts appeared to the stylistic ones, mostly those that result in weakening the original style of the author in favour of the translator's own style. What the semantic shifts concerns, in comparison with the mediating translation they seem to occur twice as often in the mediated translation.
