Number Line and its Understanding by Primary School Pupils

This diploma thesis deals with the number line as a tool to improve pupil's understanding of various mathematical concepts, structures, properties and algorithms. The aim of the thesis is to determine how are lower secondary pupils able to use the number line and to connect findings with the content of their textbooks. The thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces the topic of number line, deals with the problems used for testing in the Czech Republic and presents several researches on this topic. The theoretical part, together with the analysis of current state of the number line usage in teaching, serves as a basis for an experimental investigation that is covered in the practical part. After a pilot testing with 19 pupils, the main testing was conducted in 7 classes of two Prague primary schools. The total of 156 pupils participated in the main testing and 8 of the pupils were later interviewed about their tests. The results are presented in the practical part. It turned out that there is a correspondence between textbook content and pupils' errors while working with number line and that pupils struggle with representing of fractions on the number line. This Bachelor´s thesis ?The collection of mathematical exercises for the 6th form pupils of basic school?, which I wrote using the textbooks, workbooks and collections from three different countries for the 6th form pupils of basic school, should supplement the shortage of exercises concerning the subject matter discussed in mathematics of the 6th form. This collection can serve as remedial education to weaker and average pupils as well as to talented pupils to intensify their interest in mathematics. More difficult exercises are marked with a picture of a dolphin. Last chapter in this collection focuses on those talented pupils and their preparation for Mathematical Olympiads.

The master thesis is concerning about opening to decimal numbers at primary school and the interactive textbook called Cyril I created in the Imagine Logo programme. It contains theory about computer-aided teaching, decimal numbers, manual for the programme and the results of experiment which proved the textbook in practice. Important component of master thesis is the programme itself, which works both as a textbook and a workbook, and which is directed at completion opening to decimal numbers and his exercises at the same time.
