Year: 2017 Language: German Number of pages: 64 Abstract The aim of the bachelor thesis is to elucidate the issue of settlement of Slovakia by the German minority from the period of the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century. The work focuses on the Spiš area and explains the cultural development of the region in the context of the German colonization of Eastern Europe. The process of colonizing Slovakia began in the 12th century. Settlers from Germany brought more sophisticated legal system to the country and created towns according to the German model. In the Middle Ages, three territories were formed in the territory of today's Slovakia, where the Germans made up the majority of the population. Spiš, as the largest of them, is distinguished by a large number of art-historical monuments from the Gothic and Renaissance periods.
