One hundred years of Švejk: tranformation of the critical reception of Jaroslav Hašek's novel

This thesis deals with one century of Czech critical reflection on Jaroslav Hašek's novel The Good Soldier Švejk, i.e. the period from the publication of the first volume in 1921 to 2021. Using reviews in the press, literary critical polemics, selected literary and scientific studies and relevant articles we follow the transformation of the critical discourse about the mentioned novel. The mutual coherence of the viewed sources is ensured by the emphasis on intratextuality, the overview character of the work is complemented by references to other works. This work then not only collects individual texts in the form of bibliographic records and recapitulations of key theses, but also places them in a cultural, historical or social context using interpretive blocks. Using interpretations, we create a narrative culminating in the conclusion when we report on the evolution of the work's critical reception. After its publication, the book is accepted by a wide readership, but literary criticism ignores it with only few exceptions. The work saw rehabilitation in the second half of the 20s of the 20th century thanks to the critical polemics of the time. Critical Reflexion of Alena Mornstajnova's Novels in the Czech Media

The diploma thesis Critical Reflexion of Alena Mornstajnova's Novels in the Czech Media analyses book reviews of the first four novels written by Alena Mornštajnová: Slepá mapa, Hotýlek, Hana and Tiché roky. This thesis aims to document how her work has been perceived by professional literary critics and reviewers. The analysis examines 27 articles from Czech literary magazines, portals (Host, Tvar, A2, iLiteratura.cz, Bubínek Revolveru) and generally focused newspapers and magazines (Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, Deník N, Respekt, Týdeník Rozhlas, Literární noviny). The period of analysis for this study begins in 2013 when her first novel was published and covers all relevant material up to the present. In the theoretical part of this thesis, firstly the following terms are defined - interpretation, art valuation, critique, review and interview. Thereafter, the biography of Alena Mornštajnová is summarized. Finally, literary media, which published crucial critiques and reviews for the analysis, are introduced. The practical part of this thesis focuses on interpreting particular novels and an on analysis and evaluation of critical reflections.
