Science competitions
Táborská, Natálie ; Janštová, Vanda (advisor) ; Hlaváčová, Lucie (referee)
This bachelor thesis is about science competitions. The first part of the thesis focuses on the factors influencing participation in science competition. The factors have been divided into four groups, the first group focuses on the motivation of pupils and students to participate in competitions. The second group focuses on the school environment and the personality of the teacher, the third group includes the factors of leisure activities. The fourth group discusses family environment factors including the socio-economic status of student's family. The second part of the paper discuses the issue of low participation of women in science competitions with possible suggestions to increase the number of female competitors. The third part of the thesis takes a closer look at the implications of participation in science competitions. Participation in a competition can affect a student both positively and negatively, so this chapter has been divided into sub-sections of Benefits and Negative. The fourth part of the thesis focuses on the impact of science competitions on the pupil's future career. Competitions influence a student's choice of college and future career.
Representation of Genetics in International Biology Olympiad
Šinknerová, Eliška ; Rothová, Olga (advisor) ; Matějková, Tereza (referee)
I chose this topic because biological competitions are an essential part of high school biology education. These competitions provide students with valuable opportunities to develop their skills in the field and can be highly motivating. The main goal of this thesis is to describe and analyse the representation of genetics and various genetic disciplines in the assignments of the last ten rounds of International Biology Olympiad (IBO) and to compare the representation of assignments from different disciplines in different countries. Another goal is to compare the frequency of genetic questions according to Bloom's taxonomy, the type of used representation and level of organization. This thesis focuses on the analysis of questions from genetics in IBO in the years 2009-2018. Genetics can be considered a discipline that binds most areas of biology, all its organizational levels, and it is a fundamental part of biology, thus being good field to examine this way. I divided the analysed questions into biological disciplines and questions belonging to genetics into the categories of Bloom's taxonomy (revised version), according to the representation used (diagram, graph, family tree, photo, table, taxonomic tree, map, electrophoresis result diagram, spectrometry result diagram, northern blot result...
Successfullness of Secondary Students in the Solution of Tasks Designed for Biology Olympiad
NOVÁK, Matěj
The diploma thesis focuses on analyzing the secondary students successfulness in the solution of tasks designed for Biology olympiad and a subsequent comparison between their results and the results of participants in the regional round of Biology olympiad. Another aim of the work is to analyze students attitudes towards biology as a school subject and to assess if and on which conditions could be Biology olympiad tasks used in school teaching. The introduction includes an overview of knowledge that deals with scientific literacy, teaching tasks and Biology olympiad. The following parts of the thesis describe the methodology, gaining information from 113 students and participants of Biology olympiad from the regional round and an overview of achieved results. These results are graphically illustrated and verbally commented. The final part contains a discussion about the results comparison with others research as well as the conclusion that summarizes the benefits of using tasks designed for Biology olympiad as teaching tasks in teaching.
Practical courses and modification of selected tasks from Biology olympiad
Filipová, Jana ; Janštová, Vanda (advisor) ; Hrozinka, Šimon (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to summarize the integration of hands-on activities into biology lessons and to compare them with the requirements in the high-school curriculum. Further it inquires the influence of hands-on activities on the knowledge of students and their interest in the subject, and it summarizes previous findings about this topic. Sources available show that hands-on activities have a positive impact and are benefitial to students. This thesis also gives some examples of chemical tests suitable to be carried out in lessons. These tests can serve as proofs of carbohydrates, lipides and proteins in plants.
