Dramatization of Ivan Olbracht's novel the Bandit Nikolai Shuhai

ENGLISH SUMMARY In my diploma thesis called The Dramatization of Ivan Olbracht's novel The Bandit Nikolai Shuhai I have concentrated primarily on the adaptation most appreciated by readers as well as, in my opinion, the adaptation of the best quality. In chapter one I focused on Olbracht's novel, precisely on the theme genesis in The Bandit Nikolai Shuhai, which was based on a real-life event. The public responses on the book, which was awarded the state prize for a literary work of art in 1933, are reflected as well. We also deal with blending of the myth with reality, the language and stylistic processing of the novel, and with the main protagonists. Personally, I consider Olbracht's The Bandit Nikolai Shuhai one of the greatest pieces within the Czech literature of 20th century. There are two reasons for which the theme of the novel became a good-quality and favourite basis for further processing: it tells an engaging story of a real-life figure and it is situated in a place which impresses us, Europeans, with enchanting exoticism of its landscape and culture. The Wild East or, the Outlaw’s Note in Czech Musicals

The author comments on the unusual growth of various renditions of old outlaw themes in the Czechoslovak theatre and film environment of the 1970s, in the period of the reign of the authoritarian communist regime. The author focuses on the Czech interpretation of the Polish musical Na szkle malowane (Painted on Glass), and further on various versions of Czech musicals, whose storylines work with the fates of real outlaws, that is, historical characters known in folklore (e.g. Juraj Jánošík, Ondráš of Janov, and Nikola Šuhaj). The text looks at period reviews and the ways that composers and reviewers deal with the genre of the musical. Consequently, the author explores the changeable forms through which the processed material reaches audiences: from gramophone records, chamber musical, medium-sized musical with pre-recorded live music, musical film, to multimedia performance. In conclusion, the claim is made that an over-production of outlaw topics in Czech musicals of the 1970s was a consequence of the increased restrictions of the manifestations of social criticism, among other reasons. It has become an alternative possibility to show at least indirectly the topic of the revolt against the leading strata that oppressed freedom.

The theme of the thesis named Dramatization of Olbracht's Nikola Šuhaj loupežník is focused on the secondary life of Olbracht's prose on Czech stages, in film and in other media as well. The interpretation begins with the recapitulation of circumstances of the creation and the initial reception of the novel and from its analysis related to the genre, language, style and composition, and proceeds with analyses of the individual dramatizations, created primarily by Peter Ulrich (LP Nikola Šuhaj loupežník, 1974; Nikola Šuhaj loupežník, Ateliér 1975; Koločava, Městské divadlo Brno 2011) or by Milan Uhde (Balada pro banditu, Divadlo na provázku 1975 and 2005; film 1978). Special attention is paid to the fact that the key dramatizations of Olbracht's Nikola Šuhaj loupežník worked with music and songs in their theatre adaptations and they used them as a means of expression that intensified the lyrical passages and allowed to transfer the poetics of the given literary model into a very impressive contemporary theatre form. The aim of the thesis is to show in what ways those who dramatized and staged the models kept transferring the story of Olbracht's novel into different social situations (or other cultures), while endeavouring to take advantage of the story in order to depict current problems of their...
