The needs analysis of the clients in drop-in centre with a drug consumption room in Berlin.

Background: Drug consumption rooms are a service where clients can consume illegal addictive substances under the supervision of trained staff. In some countries, drug consumption rooms have been in operation for over 30 years, and various studies provide positive results that acquaint us with the benefits that drug consumption rooms provide. However, this master thesis does not aim to focus on the already confirmed, but on the specific experiences and needs of individuals who are in almost daily contact with this type of service. The research was done in a low-threshold facility with a drug consumption room in Berlin named Birkenstube. This facility has been in operation since the beginning of 2004 and is thus one of the first facilities with a drug consumption room in the city of Berlin. Despite its long history, tradition and constantly changing needs of its clientele, the activity of this facility was last evaluated in the year 2015. Drug consumption rooms establishment and their providing to drug users: overview of international experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Drug consumption rooms (DCR) are places for the hygienic consumption of preobtained drugs in a non-judgemental environment and under the supervision of trained staff. Since 1986, the DCR have been established in 10 countries around the world. Despite the fact that Czech Republic offers wide range of services aimed to minimize the risks connected to problematic drug users, intravenous aplication still prevails. While, effectivity of DCR has already been proven, there are none in the Czech Republic. AIMS: The work aims to provide systematic and comprehensive summary of current state of knowledge regarding establishment and runing of DCR from international experiences. Additionally, the target of this work is to describe what conditions, necessary for legal establishment of DCR, were set in these countries and whether these conditions can be set in Czech Republic. Finally, the thesis analyzes whether the DCR are visited and used by clients and describes what the profile of a typical client is. Consumption rooms for drug users - Needs analysis

Consumption rooms for drug users are implemented as a tool of tertiary prevention by a number of European countries. These services are based on harm reduction philosophy. The objectives of these programs include minimizing health risks, overdose prevention, motivating users to change their lifestyle. Consumption room has also effect in reduction of negative effects associated with open drug scenes such as the drug consumption in public places. The thesis is about a need analysis of a theoretical application of a consumption room in the capital city Prague. After a theoretical introduction, which introduces the background of the project, the project objectives and examples of foreign practice presented in a literature, are presented the results of qualitative research. The aim of the research, conducted by the technique of semi-structured interview, is to answer the basic questions of needs and expectations of potential users, experts in the treatment and prevention of addiction and other persons who may be considered as involved from the perspective of discussion about consumption.
