Development of shojo and shonen manga character registers

(in English) A thesis looks into a development of character registers called yakuwarigo in shoujo and shounen manga from years 70s, 90s and 2000s. The main topic is about finding out how during those years the character registers changed in both genres (shoujo and shounen) separately and comparing the changes with each other. Due to limited length this work will be concentrating on character registers of female characters only.
Narrative strategies in Japanese detective prose from 60s to 80s of the 20th Century

(anglicky): In this thesis, two representative works of two post-war schools of Japanese detective fiction are analysed based on the knowledge of modern narratology. Two mentioned schools are so called social school of detective fiction (shakaiha 社会派), which appeared at the beginning of 60ties, and new authentic school of detective fiction (shin honkakuha 新本格派), which appeared at the beginning of 80ties. This thesis focuses on a theoretical understanding of the term "detective fiction", it describes the development of the detective genre in post-war Japan while focusing on the debates on "authentic" and "inauthentic" detective fiction and describes typical features of two previously mentioned schools. The by using a theoretical apparat suitable for analysing works of very schematic detective genre, two works - Points and lines (Ten to sen 点と線, 1958) written by Matsumoto Seichō 松本清張 (1909-1992) and Tokyo Zodiac Murders (Senseijutu satsujin jiken 占星術殺人事件, 1981) written by Shimada Sōji 島田荘司 (1948 - ) - are analysed. Analyses focus on composition schemes of both works and on the example translated from original works, existence or absence of elements typical for both schools are demonstrated while a different usage of these elements is showed.
The Aum Shinrikyo Affair: Aberration, or a Logical Consequence of Postponed Problems in Japanese Society?

This bachelor thesis is devoted to the new religious movement Aum Shinrikyo with respect to the selected basic social links and aspects of the value orientation within Japanese society. The thesis defines the new religious movements in the world, focusing on their development in Japan and deals with the possibilities of their existence and activity in relation to the extent of religious freedom during the Meiji Constitution and subsequently under the Pacifist post-war Constitution. The significant elements, co-determining the formation, activity and character of the new religious movements in Japan, are also the various concepts of the value orientation in Japanese society, e.g. Amae, Tate shakai, Oyabun-kobun, Shuudan ishiki, including the issue of social integration of the individuals into the society which is, contrary to the western societies focused on individual, predominantly collectivistic. To facilitate understanding of the context, the thesis also explores the development and specificities of Aum Shinrikyo and Asahara Shoukou, focusing on his power position within this new religious movement where he was able to influence a considerable number of his followers and persuade them to commit the terrorist acts, unprecedented in Japan until then. Miyazawa Kenji, the Poet of Nature

The aim of this work is introduction of ethics and cosmology found in the works of Miyazawa Kenji and their current interpretation by Japanese scholars through interpretation of novel Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru ( 銀 河 鉄 道 の 夜 ). Since the author's biography, especially his religious life (especially the thoughts contained in the Lotus Sutra and the author's view of Christianity), is an essential stepping stone for understanding of his work, the work focuses on these topics as well.
Between Subjectivity and Object: Self in the Discourse of Modern Japanese Literature

(in English): This thesis is devided into three parts. In the fist part, the development of literary discourse in Japan between Meiji and postwar period is described, with emphasis on the development of literary character and Subject in a work of literature. The second part theoretical apparatus for studiying and analyzing literary character is introduced, using contemporary literary theory. In that part relationship between literary character and its subject is also included. In the third part, these findings are applied on a specific literary works of Japanese postwar literature, on which development and changes of literary character are observed. The three analyzed works here are Kamen no kokuhaku by Mishima Yukio, Tanin no kao by Abe Kōbō and Man'en gan'nen no futtobōru by Ōe Kenzaburō.
The Development of the Character of Murasaki in The Tale of Genji

The bachelor thesis deals with a literature character Murasaki of the Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari), which is considered to be the oldest extant psychological novel. Murasaki is one of the main characters and for Genji the embodiment of the ideal woman. Their relationship is in many ways exceptional. The aim of the thesis is to describe and analyze the changes of the character of Murasaki at the different stages of her life with the consideration of her relationship with Genji and other characters. The changes are illustrated by many examples taken from the book.
The Issue of Food in the Work of Kawakami Hiromi

This master's thesis focuses on the issue of food in some selected works by Kawakami Hiromi (born 1958). At first, it attempts to express some characteristic features of modern Japanese cuisine in general, which are closely connected to the creation of the concept of national identity, and to give a summary of works of modern and contemporary Japanese literature in which the topic of food is present. Next, it describes the work of Kawakami Hiromi. After introducing the author's main masterpieces and its typical features, it comes to the interpretation of the selected texts which were published within 1998 and 2010. It interprets the works mainly from the thematic point of view and it attempts to determine connections in which the issue and motifs of food appear. It also studies what role is played by food, eating or cooking in Kawakami's work. In selected translated passages it makes an effort to give evidence of certain elements in her work such as: food as means of befriendment, motif of a skilled male cook, inability to cook, which leads to a conflict in a relationship etc. It compares works in which often appear lonely women protagonists longing for love and in which the real world meets the supernatural or the traditional elements meet the modern ones. Individualism in Natsume Sōseki's Work

(in English) A thesis deals with individualism in Natsume Sōseki's work. The main topic is about how did the autor himself understand the individualism and based on which personal experiences did he create his conception of it. The second part of this thesis analyzes four literary works, Botchan, Sanshirō, Sorekara and Kokoro, on which I would like to show, which types of individuals Sóseki introduces to his readers and how the philosophy of individualism has affected his literary work.
Takarazuka Revue's Sources of Inspiration in the Course of History
