Comparison of Czech and Chinese science- fictions: Future and Folding Beijing

The bachelor thesis will focus on selected features of two popular science fiction novels, the Czech work Futurum (Future) and the Chinese work 北京折叠 (Folding Beijing). The theme of both novels is the dystopian future taking place in the city. By comparing the two selected literary works from linguistic and cultural aspects, as well as from the perspective of literary studies, the primary goal of the thesis is to characterise the similarities and differences between Czech and Chinese, two typologically and genealogically distinctive languages. Besides, finding out the correspondences and distinctions of the two literary works in terms of literary studies and cultural surveys belong to the secondary goals. The theoretical part of the thesis will serve as the terminological support for the subsequent analysis of these novels, in which the author will discuss the relevant theories of linguistic analysis, including the language styles, the stratification of national languages, the poetic expressions, the characteristics of vocabulary, expressivity, non-equivalent vocabulary and culture. In the practical part, a comparative analysis based on the aforementioned theories will be conducted.
