Samizdat in the post-digital era
Hroch, Miloš ; Turek, Pavel (advisor) ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (referee) ; Charvát, Jan (referee)
This dissertation examines the role of material in six selected zines from subcultural, artistic and activist circles. The work deals with printed micro media with a small reach and is based on the concepts of alternative media, gives a brief overview of theoretical perspectives on zines from subcultural studies, through fan studies and participatory culture. The thesis is critical of the concepts and calls for the enrichment of existing perspectives, mostly consolidated in old (post- marxist) materialism: specifically, for a reflection on post-digital culture and new materialism, which allows us to reconsider the role of material in the production and distribution of zines. The case study combines personal interviews and content analysis with an emphasis on material and ethnography of the spaces where zines are formed and transmitted. Based on Bourdieu's field theory, the study conceptualises the zine scene as a field of zine production and seeks to radically contextualise the traffic between bodies, spaces, paper and other materials, machines, and finally capital (economic and subcultural). The theoretical apparatus allows to examine the changing role of zines in the post-digital age when information shifts from sowers to platforms of emotion and touch. The main argument of the thesis is that...
Preparation of 6-Aryl- and 6-Heteroarylpurines by [2+2+2]-Cyclotrimerizations
Turek, Pavel
Preparation of 6-Aryl- and 6-Heteroarylpurines by [2+2+2]- Cyclotrimerizations Mgr. Pavel Turek Dept. of Organic and Nuclear Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Charles University Prague 2009 The aim of my project was to synthesize new potentially biologically active arylpurines by transition metal catalyzed or mediated [2+2+2]-cyclotrimerization reactions. This approach should enable to assemble various structural motives attached to the purine skeleton. The main targets were 6-arylpurines. 6-Arylpurine derivatives have diverse types of a biological activity: some substituted 6-arylpurine bases are antagonists of corticotropin-releasing hormone or possess antimycobacterial and antibacterial activity, while 6-arylpurine ribonucleosides are potent cytostatics. These facts explain, why it is worth being interested in synthesis of this class of compounds. Until now 6-arylpurines have been mostly prepared by cross-coupling reactions of 6- halopurines with various organometallic compounds, but this approach is limited by factors like availability, reactivity and stability of the corresponding arylmetals. The synthetic strategy used in my project was based on a transition metal catalyzed or mediated cyclotrimerization of alkynes. Generally, these methods enable to assemble aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds from...
The history of music journalism from the year 1963 until now
Frýdová, Tereza ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Turek, Pavel (referee)
Diploma thesis The history of music journalism from the year 1963 until now examines the development of domestic music journalism from the year 1963 to the present in three crucial periods. The first period starts by the year 1963 because at this time the first professional music magazine Melodie in the Czechoslovak socialism republic developed. The second period that I study in my thesis was the 1990s, right after the Velvet Revolution, when many new music magazines were established, led by the magazine Rock & Pop. The third period I study in my thesis are the times after the year 2000 which are characterized by the development of online music journalism and by diminishing role of printed music magazines. In the theoretical part, I briefly describe every period by key historical characteristics and I also describe theirs dominant music magazines. In the last section, where I focus on the present time and the world of Internet, I focus also on the online music journalism as a new crucial field of the 21 century which fundamentally changed the work of music journalists. In the analytical part, I choose important music journalists for each period whose work is linked to the period, and with whom I conducted the interviews. The research method is qualitative research conducted in the form of semi-structured...
Hodnocení jakosti vody a sedimentu na Vepřovském novém rybníku v povodí Losenického potoka
Turek, Pavel
The thesis is focused on measuring of water quality and phytotoxicity of sediments. In first part is described legislation related with water and ponds and also is determined the terms associated with this topic. Furthermore is characterized location and described places of taking samples. Samples were taken in quarterly periods and then evaluated in laboratory of Mendel university Department of Applied and Landscape Ecology. In following part are specified procedures of evaluation taken samples and evaluation results monitored parameters (amount of dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, conducti-vity, chemical oxygen demand, quantity of nitrates, nitrogen and phosphor). Phytotoxicity was evaluated by test phytotoxicity through the Phytotoxkit.
Analysis of contemporary rock magazines in the Czech Republic
Bartlová, Natálie ; Turek, Pavel (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
The bachelor thesis Analysis of Contemporary Rock Magazines Based in the Czech Republic analyzes the content representation of the domestic music scene compared to the international music scene using the example of Fakker, Headliner and Full Moon magazines. It also looks at how this representation affects the magazines' sales and success from the point of view of their chief editors. The analysis is done on 2018 issues, using the method of quantitative content analysis ("hard data"), which is supplemented with interviews with chief editors of these magazines ("soft data"). The theoretical part provides a short introduction to the history of music magazines in the Czech Republic before and after 1989, the year of the Velvet Revolution. Then the magazines Fakker, Full Moon and Headliner are summarized. The methods of quantitative analysis and of collecting data are explained in the practical part. These methods were used on three randomly selected issues of Fakker, Full Moon and Headliner from 2018. The data is recorded in a codebook. The quantitative analysis is followed by transcripts of interviews with the chief editors of Fakker (Petr "Ape" Adámek), Full Moon (Michal Pařízek) and Headliner ("Honza" Vedral). The summary outlines the results of the analysis and the contents of the interviews. As a...
Comparative analysis of the visual component in the magazine Reportér and project Echo24
Weingartová, Michaela ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Turek, Pavel (referee)
The main goal of this thesis was to determine how projects Echo24 and Reporter work with journalistic photography using comparative analysis of their visual content. Both projects were found in 2014 as a reaction to a dramatical change of ownership of the Czech media. These changes also had an impact on journalistic photographers, because the new owners tend to save their costs on photography. This is also one of the reasons why I chose to analyze projects that started in 2014. To explain the broader context, in the first part of this thesis I describe the context of journalistic photography and the Czech media market development from the year 1989. In this work, I also describe other projects similar to Echo24 and Reportér. In the second part of the thesis, I use quantitative content analysis to describe the usage of the photographs in the printed version of Echo24 and Reportér. I also compare the collected data with answers from questionnaires with members of the editorial of the projects and photojournalists. In this paper, I found out that the project Echo24 represents the opposite approach towards photography than Reportér. Echo24, like other media, tends to save their cost on photography. Reportér on the other side can be defined as the protector of journalistic and photojournalistic values....
Visual Propaganda of Kim Jong-un
Zangová, Clara ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Turek, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the content analysis of photographs of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The aims of the thesis are to designate the means of visual propaganda used by Kim Jong-un, to describe how the DPRK is presented through photographs, and to try to compare these tools with the propaganda and the political communication of the great dictators of the 20th century - Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Zedong. The content of the thesis is a brief overview of the modern North Korean history and a description of the country's actual situation, including the specifics of local propaganda. Further follows the determination of propaganda itself according to several theories, and a description of propaganda tools of the aforementioned leaders. The crucial part of the thesis is the content analysis of the photographs of Kim Jong-un published from June 2018 to February 2019, during the interval between two summits hosting Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump. The analytical part is amended with the exposition of the personality profile of the leader.
