Aubrechtová, Evžena ; Mouralová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Synková, Hana (referee)
The thesis deals with housing and inhabitants' coexistence strategies and policies which have been and are implemented by Most City Municipality. The work analyses the causes of the current state of housing and coexistence of the inhabitants with the focus on the two socially excluded (Roma) locations (Stovky and Chánov locations), describes past and current housing strategies (building and reconstructions of the Chánov housing estate, first and second wave of flats privatisation, Integrated Plan of Most City Development - Deprived Most Zones and Civil Coexistence, Mapping 100 Action) whereas the strategies are evaluated as well in the thesis. The work also includes the housing policies stakeholders' analysis. The work brings the examples of solutions and good practices from the other two Czech cities (Ústí nad Labem a Ostrava) and the two European Union countries (Spain and Hungary) being concerned with a similar problem like municipalities in the Czech Republic due to their high Roma populations. The experiences and good practices examples from the other cities and countries are discussed in relation to an option to utilize them in Most City.
Education of Roma children in the Czech Republic
Zarzycká, Andrea ; Čabanová, Bohumila (advisor) ; Synková, Hana (referee)
Diploma thesis "Education of Roma children in the Czech Republic" deals with the issue of the status quo in education of Roma children. The aim is to analyze the situation in the education of Roma children in the Czech Republic and to compare it with other European countries and find examples of good practice. The educational situation of Roma pupils remains unsatisfactory, not only in the Czech Republic but also in other European countries. Roma pupils continue to be subject to exclusion in quality education resulting from variety of many interrelated factors including poor living conditions of parents, especially high unemployment, low education level and living in social exclusion. It is necessary to make systemic changes in order to increase the quality education chances of Roma children, because the Roma population belongs among the most socially vulnerable groups affected by a variety of risk factors that often result in cumulative disadvantages and often bring the Roma into the spiral of mechanisms leading to social exclusion.

Radek Vorlíček ABSTRACT The dissertation explores the dynamics of social marginality and dominance in educational settings. It explores social distance dynamics among pupils in elementary school, and its impact on their position in social hierarchy. I focus on social interaction in a group of children, and record the context in which the inclusion or exclusion of non-dominant identities take place. Special attention is paid to the role of schools in the process of boundary constructions. Larger framework of the research is integration, segregation and assimilation tendencies of school systems. The dissertation is based upon long-term qualitative inductive and ethnographic fieldwork. The central method of my fieldwork is observation. To some extent, the research was conducted in the framework of goffmanian interactionism. The data for this study have been collected over a period of ten months in twelve elementary schools located in various regions of the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. The dissertation is structured in four parts: (1) Introduction, referring to the aim and structure of the dissertation; (2) Methodology, presenting the research process, strategies and methods as well as data analysis, theoretical and methodological discussions, reflexivity and ethical aspects; (3) Elementary schools in...

Ethnicity Revisited: the Case of Higher Educated Younger Generation Roma in Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe
Remete, Anamaria ; Yasar, Abu Ghosh (advisor) ; Synková, Hana (referee) ; Militello, Paolo (referee)
Anamaria Remete TEMA EMMC 2nd year Ethnicity Revisited: the Case of Higher Educated Younger Generation Roma in Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe Abstract This research aims to explore the self perception of ethnicity of younger generation Roma in Central and Eastern Europe. The sample population is represented by two groups of higher educated Roma. First those who were beneficiaries of the university scholarships granted by the Open Society Institute's Roma Initiatives. Second those who are working in Roma-focused NGO advocacy organizations. The organisations are: the Open Society Institute-Budapest, European Roma Rights Centre also in Budapest, the European Roma Information Office in Brussels and the European Roma and Travellers Forum by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg . This strategy of the Open Society Institute and the above mentioned NGOs has only a short history, which will be discussed further in the study. The self perception dimension is going to be analyzed through the application of the concept of "everyday ethnicity" as developed by scholars Rogers Brubaker, Paloma Gay y Blasco and Carol Silverman in order to gain insight into the dynamics of the factors that come into play in the process of creating meaning for young and higher-educated Roma in countries from Central and Eastern...
Legitimation and professionalization of a Romani NGO in the Czech Repulic
Synková, Hana ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Mušinka, Alexander (referee)
Legitimation and professionalization of a Romani NGO in the Czech Republic Hana Synková This PhD. thesis maps strategies of legitimation and survival of non-governmental organizations working with people that use to be categorized as "socially excluded" or "Roma". It attempts to answer the question: "What NGOs do to be able to look successful, gain resources, and create organizational reputation?" This work does not treat organizations as "things", but as processes and social networks influenced by state and European policies, funding mechanisms and internal competition. Despite the organizations being discursively divided into those preferring more ethnic or social definition of their clients, they have to cope with the same pressures in the shape of social services law, standards of quality or control systems that come with projects. Organizations are far from devoting their time to "work with clients"; they are also involved in enlarging social capital of their members and in production of "texts" that serve their legitimation claims towards control bodies, other organizations and public. In order to research these publicly less visible processes, the authoress uses methods of organizational anthropology - fieldwork inside organization and at many places which are contextually linked to the...
