The Image of Norse Mythology and the Old North in Contemporary Czech Pop-culture
Fröhlichová, Alena ; Březinová, Helena (advisor) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
In my bachelor thesis I will examine an interesting phenomenon of recent decades: abundant use of Norse mythology and Old Norse literature in various literary and cultural contexts in the Czech environment. I will focus on works of domestic origin and marginally also on translated works in order to create a more complete picture of materials inspired by Norse mythology, which the reader can encounter in the Czech environment I will try to define and individual trends in the approach to the materials of Norse mythology. Subsequently, I will try to critically evaluate what image of the old North the individual works create, whether the original sources are being distorted, whether it is possible to talk about a trend/trends, or for what agenda the Nordic materials and motifs are being used. In the first part of the work, I will present and analytically evaluate the collected materials, especially books and audio-visual material, but I will also focus on the environment of the internet and social networks. In the second part, I will try to define the trends that can possible be traced in the use of Norse mythology. When comparing the original sources with modern adaptations, I will use the method of close reading, but I will always take into account the historical context. My work should answer the question of...
Continuity and Contact: The Contemporary Sagas and Cultural Memory
Korecká, Lucie ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Rohrbach, Lena (referee) ; Hermann, Pernille (referee)
The study is focused on the Old Norse "contemporary sagas" (texts composed with a short time distance from the events of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries that are recorded in them) and some of the bishops' sagas as images of the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Icelanders' identity and their relationship to other lands, especially Norway. It aims at analysing the roles and meanings of various identity bearers portrayed in these sources - chieftains, royal representatives, ecclesiastical dignitaries, and saintly bishops. The approach to the sources is based on an analysis of how recent historical events were transformed into a narrative discourse, in which they were connected to the more distant past that formed the medieval Icelandic society's cultural memory. That way, these events themselves became a part of this society's cultural memory, and the given historical knowledge was endowed with specific meanings, which were not inherently present in the knowledge itself, but were based on its contextualization. The study shows how the narrativization of the recent events and their integration into the cultural memory creates a meaningful relationship between the past and the present. The objective of the study is to show how the narrative sources reflect the society's perception of its recent...

Photoresist exposure via the LCD panel
Fiala, Matouš ; Starý, Jiří (referee) ; Vyroubal, Petr (advisor)
The bachelor thesis deals with the design and development of a device using a liquid crystal display panel to create a motif when exposing a photoresist to ultraviolet radiation. For a functional design, it is essential to understand and comprehend the various components of the device, the physical principles and the control of the exposure process. The first part of the text is a theoretical summary that should introduce the reader to the issues discussed in the following sections. This is followed by an analysis and proposed solutions to specific obstacles related to the design and realization process of the device. The work includes manufacturing of a prototype device, the creation of the device software, and a user interface application through which the device is controlled. The thesis also contains simulations, a CAD model of the prototype, documentation and measured exposure results.
The Seal Skin: An Interpretation of the Icelandic Folktale and its Motifs with regard to the Old Norse Symbolic Frame
Nováková, Barbora ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Kozák, Jan (referee)
This work presents an interpretation of icelandic narrative about the Seal Skin with regard to the Old Norse symbolic frame, so the possible paralel motifs and motivic "cores" could arise, even in spite of the temporal period between the origin of our primary text and the origin of Old Norse myths and sagas. The approach of this work is based in structural theories and tools used by Claude Lévi-Strauss, where these tools help us identify the basic narrative units called mythemes: primarily they include characters, objects and settings. The basic principle of founding these mythemes in different genres and cultural contexts is the method of amplification, which is used in psychological and clinical practice of Carl Gustav Jung. The aim of this work is to grasp and comprehend the narrative and its meaning and connect the Old North mythical tradition with modern folklore of Iceland. The result is in-depth analysis of the symbolical net, in which the narrative and its mythemes are embedded. Furthemore this analysis displays the contribution and benefits of the particular interpretation levels and its usefulness for future research. Key words: seal skin, seal woman, seal, icelandic folklore, Old Norse myths
Power, Violence and Society. A Comparison of Walter Benjamin's and Ernst Jünger's Views
Davydzka, Jagor ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Schneider, Thomas (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis of texts by Walter Benjamin and Ernst Jünger, the topic of which is the place of power and violence in society. The basic texts are Zur Kritik der Gewalt and Theorien des deutschen Faschismus by Walter Benjamin and Über die Gefahr, Die totale Mobilmachung and Der Pazifismus by Ernst Jünger. Attention is primarily focused on the texts as they are. The ideological context of the period in which the selected texts were created plays a significant, though not the leading role. The goal of the thesis is to analyse and to interpret the content of the selected works. The thesis also aims to show the main differences and similarities in the ideologies of both authors, so that it becomes possible to clearly describe their attitudes towards violence in society. KEYWORDS Power, violence, society, law, Weimar Republic, Walter Benjamin, Ernst Jünger
