Sandstone moisture measurement: laboratory and field techniques

Summary: In my thesis I reviewed the most used methods for moisture measurements with the focus on sandstone exposures. Concerning direct methods, the gravimetric is used most commonly for the calibration of other methods. Concerning indirect methods I mention radiometric, microwave, resistive and capacity methods. The major part of thesis is dedicated to capacity device TDR (Time Domain Reflektometry), which emits electromagnetics pulses and measures the reflection time at the beginning and the end of the probe. This methodology is nondestructive and is widely used, mainly in pedology. In practical part of Theses I worked with drill cores of sandstone from natural exposures and I detected their mass water content using gravimetric method, their bulk density by laboratory measurements and from those values I calculated volumetric water content. Average value from measured mass water content is 3,3% and from volumetric water content 6,2%. At some localities the moisture content was measured by TDR was measured beside taking drill cores At places where it was possible to compare measurements using TDR with gravimetric method, TDR measurements show usually higher values (in average 1% higher) then gravimetric method. Salt precipitation in subsurface zone of sandstone and other porous rocks and simulation of water transport and evaporation

The main goal of this thesis was to find and compare salt-forming ions from samples of a subsurface zone of sandstone and other porous rocks. The surveyed samples came from different environments (humid and arid climate) from different locations in the Czech Republic, Jordan and the United States of America. Identification of various types of salt was based on evaluation of chemical analyzes of leached samples. Furthermore a laboratory experiment in which I used a fluorescein dye to observe the capillary rise and evaporation in unsaturated samples of sandstone was carried out. The salt content in the Czech Republic humid environment locations is generally lower than the one in foreign arid climate locations. Halit dominates in the locations Petra and Crystal Peak. In the other locations sulphate minerals dominate. The salts containing aluminum - alums were determined in the Czech Republic in the area of Czech Paradise and the surrounding. Relatively high concentrations of nitrate mineral nitratine were identified in the Devil's Pulpit location in Pilsen, the Czech Republic. Gidon Kremer - Profile of the Artist

Gidon Kremer represents one of the most influential violinists not only of his generation. During his career, lasting more than forty years already, Mr. Kremer has built a position of a respected personality, whose interpretations of classical violin repertory are unconventional and innovative. Meanwhile, Mr. Kremer is known for his support of contemporary music, which he presents systematically to his audience. His biography is extraordinary; being originally a Soviet artist, he decided to leave the Soviet Union and settle in the West, while seeking more artistic freedom. This thesis conducts a survey of his unusual life story, starting from his childhood years in Latvian Riga, his studies with David Oistrakh, first international successes, followed by his emigration and his subsequent life in the West. There is also an outline of his multiple artistic activities included, for example intensive cooperation with his ensemble Kremerata Baltica. Besides that, his long - term interest in contemporary music is documented in detail. The thesis focuses also on his interpretation of the Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo by J. S. Bach. Last but not least, the final chapter is dedicated to Mr. Kremer´s artistic opinions and reflections
