Calculation of Fatigue Crack Lengths from CMOD Measurement Performed on Concrete 3PB Specimens

The fatigue of cement based composites is now one of the progressive branches in research. To describe fatigue crack growth quantitatively it is necessary to know the values of materials parameters for Paris-Erdogan law. In cement based composites it is difficult to measure crack lengths directly. Therefore the crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) is measured and then recalculated to crack lengths. The aim of the present article is to find the relation between CMOD and the corresponding crack length for three point bend (3PB) specimen by using cohesive model that is implemented in ATENA software

Numerical Analysis of the Thickness Influence on the Stress Field at Crack Tip for Different Poisson´s Ratios

The influence of in- and out- of plane constraints on the behaviour of cracks under mode- I loading condition is studied. The independence of the stress intensity tensor structure, with respect to the specimen thickness B shows that under loss of constraint conditions higher order tensor members of the Williams expansion must be considered to characterize the singular stress field, and to explain the increasing apparent fracture toughness resulting experimentally for decreasing specimen thickness. A numerical study of the effect of Poisson’s ratio on stationary mode I crack tip fields is presented in the contribution. Finite element calculations for two-dimensional (v =0) and three-dimensional bodies are performed and compared. Further, the stress intensity tensor K, and the elastic txx and tzz components of the tij constraint tensor in the middle of a three-dimensional crack front are determined using direct methods for the same level of loading.

Crack lenghts calculation from COD measurement for cement based composites

The purpose of the present article is to find the relation between COD and the corresponding crack length for three point bend specimen.

Optimization of the initial crack length in consideration of the groove width for wedge splitting test specimen

An optimization of the initiate crack length in view of the width of grips groove of the wedge splitting (WS) specimen is the topic of the contribution. The WS specimens are now started to be used for fracture laboratory testing, especially of quasi-brittle cement-based composites. For the optimization the theory of the general fracture mechanics is used. For the numerical calculation the finite element method and ANSYS software are used. At the end, the optimal crack lengths for various grips widths are discussed and some suggestions are pronounced.

Kinetics of fatigue crack growth in Eurofer 97 steel

The fatigue crack growth rate in the Eurofer 97 steel was measured by two different methodologies. Small crack growth data were obtained using cylindrical specimens with a shallow notch. No artificial crack starters were used. The growth of semicircular cracks of length between 10 – 2000 m were measured in symmetrical tension-compression cycling with constant strain amplitude (R = -1). Long crack data were measured using standard CT specimen and ASTM methodology in stress control with R = 0.1. The growth of fatigue cracks with length in the range of 10 – 30 mm was determined. It is shown that the crack growth rate of both types of cracks are in a very good agreement if J-integral rep-resentation is used and reasonable assumptions of the crack closure effects are taken into account.

The paper presents values of basic fatigue parameters measured on three-point bending specimens of concrete for pre-stressed elements. These specimens are the most frequently used for fracture laboratory testing, especially of quasi-brittle cement-based composites. According to the regression technique, pilot Wöhler curve for predicting the fatigue life of pres-stressed concrete element is suggested.
