Echo of Moscow's coverage of the Ukraine war from 2014 to 2022

The media outlets Echo of Moscow, Novaya Gazeta, Dozhd TV, and Radio Svoboda are all seen as counter-propaganda outlets in contemporary Russia. As a result, these leftist media outlets have been more targeted by the law since Putin took office. In this thesis, I investigate particularly how Echo of Moscow reported on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. From its inception, the Echo had operated under the guiding tenet that "all meaningful points of view on events should be presented". However, the station was controlled 66.5% by state-owned Gazprom-Media, meanwhile, the rest controlled by journalists, including the radio station staff, owns the remaining 33.5% (Slavtcheva-Petkova, 2018). Hence, the thesis questions: can the station assert impartiality while accepting funds from Gazprom Media? The study employs the journalistic notions of objectivity and fairness in the framework of a quantitatively-oriented qualitative content analysis of source practices in radio broadcasts by Echo of Moscow. In order to provide satisfactory outcomes, author utilises a quantitative content analysis of hundreds of reports and numerous sources to examine the diversity of viewpoints expressed in Echo Moscow broadcasts published from 2014 to 2022.
