Food, Women, and Personal IdentitySelected Chapters from Contemporary Czech Prose

The aim of this thesis is to analyse selected ways in which contemporary Czech prose manifests the complex interconnection of personal (female) identity, gender, and dietary practices. The first part of the thesis develops a theoretical and methodological framework based on anthropologizing approaches to literature, especially those developed in contemporary Polish literary criticism. In these approaches, literature is understood as one kind of linguistic - and more broadly cultural - practice, and interpretation is taken to be one of the most important tasks of literary research. Another theoretical impulse is feminist criticism, which the thesis reflects in its gynocritical selection of texts to analyse and in its understanding of corporeality, everyday life, and personal identity as always gendered. The main part of the thesis consists of four relatively separate interpretative chapters (2-5), which are probes into different ways in which personal (female) identity, gender, and dietary practices are grasped in contemporary Czech prose. The second chapter focuses on autobiographical prose by female authors who have experienced anorexia. Feminism and Literary Criticism in Pavla Moudrá's Journalism

The thesis concentrates on the literary and feminist articles of Pavla Moudrá, which she published in the journals Ženská revue, Ženské listy, Ženský obzor and Ženský svět. An important part of the diploma is a complete bibliography of her texts issued in these periodicals. The analysis concentrates then mainly on articles connected to literature and "the woman question". It describes the author's opinions in their relationship with the peace movement, animal welfare, the anti-alcoholic movement and spiritualism. In all of these areas, she was involved as a promoter of spiritual values, leading to the spiritual revival of mankind, and for this purpose she also subordinated her journalism. She tried to thematise particular social problems, indicative of the decline of human morality, as well as writing more general texts, more metaphorical and strongly inspired by the theosophical movement. It influenced the way she perceived literature: she valued mainly the author's intention, which should be able to offer a positive example for the reader. She considered a poet, meaning a writer and an artist in general, to be a creature standing close to God and having the ability to see more than the average person. Modern pedagogy and didactics in the autobigraphical works of Pavla Moudrá ("Z dívčích let do plného života" trilogy)

My thesis focuses on didactic and pedagogical thoughts of Pavla Moudrá in regards of the Z dívčích let do plného života trilogy, published between 1911 and 1936. Broader study of her work and articles concerning upbringing and educating children is also included, because of her spiritualistic notions and pacifistic background. The important aspect of said trilogy is the amount of autobiographical themes, which we can trace and find Moudrá's own experiences and views. The form used in the books to support sense of authenticity, a child-written diary entries and the contrast to mature, thorough language creates a space to look at depicted events with hindsight and re-evaluate them. Her reasoning draws from personal experience and her surroundings, as well as early 20th century European schools of thought open to new principals. Contemporary findings and arguments in the fields of education and didactics will be confronted with Moudrá's work as part of this thesis.
