Incantation. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4, H 358 by Bohuslav Martinů holds significant importance in his oeuvre and remains frequently performed. Composed during his last stay in the United States between 1955 and 1956, it exemplifies the "fantasy" creative period of Martinů's mature work. The composition was commissioned by Fromm Music Foundation, nevertheless Martinů composed it for his close friend, the renowned pianist Rudolf Firkušný. The pianist gave its first performance in New York the very year it was completed and subsequently had exclusive interpretation rights to it. During the composer's lifetime, Firkušný performed the work a total of six times in America and Europe. However, Martinů did not have opportunity to be witness of its live performance, nor did he participate in a preparation for the release of the piece, as its publication was postponed due to the continuing rights of the pianist as well as due to prioritizing the release of another composer's work. The first and until recently only printed edition of Incantation was published in 1970 by the Bärenreiter-Verlag Kassel. Perception of Bohuslav Martinů's Works in the German speaking countries 1923 - 1939

Die vorliegende Arbeit wurde einem bis dahin unerforschten Thema gewidmet, nämlich dem Komponisten Bohuslav Martinů und seiner Rolle im Musikleben des deutschsprachigen Raumes in den Jahren 1923-1939. Bohuslav Martinů, der seit 1923 in Paris lebte, richtete sein hauptsächliches Interesse dem Pariser Musikgeschehen und blieb mit dem Musikleben der ersten Tschechoslowakischen Republik in Verbindung. Dennoch wandte sich seine Aufmerksamkeit auch bald dem jungen Musikleben des deutschsprachigen Raums zu. Das Thema, das vom Interesse am Schaffen von Bohuslav Martinů geleitet ist, der zu Beginn der untersuchten Zeitspanne noch unbekannt war, jedoch rasch zu einem wichtigen Vertreter der Komponistengeneration der Zwischenkriegszeit avancierte, steht in mehreren Wechselwirkungen. Ausgehend von Recherchen zeitgenössischer Dokumente - Korrespondenz, Martinůs Notizen und Publizistik - wurden Studien zum Musikleben, zur Biographik und Rezeption durchgeführt. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurden Martinůs Werke und ihre Aufführungen im deutschsprachigen Raum sowie die Initiatoren, Veranstalter und Interpreten behandelt. Early symphonic works of Bohuslav Martinů and issues pertaining to their critical edition

The dissertation titled Raná symfonická tvorba Bohuslava Martinů a problematika její kritické edice (Early Symphonic Works of Bohuslav Martinů and Issues Pertaining to Their Critical Edition) deals with a portion of Martinů's compositional output that has so far been investigated only marginally, namely the period of his artistic beginnings when he was seeking his compositional language and technique. The first part of the dissertation attempts a deeper exploration of the circumstances of origin of the Nocturno 1, H. 91 and the Balada k Böcklinovu obrazu "Villa na moři" (Ballad on Böcklin's Painting "Villa by the Sea"), H. 97. Although available sources do not provide a complete picture of the years 1914-15, they do offer new findings. The dissertation describes the relationship among the Nocturno 1, the Skladba pro velký orchestr (Composition for Large Orchestra), H. 90, and the Nocturno "Růže v noci" (Nocturno "Roses in the Night"), H. 96, which may together have formed the now-missing set of dance scenes with recitation Tance se závoji (Dances with Veils), H. 93, composed for the Russian dancer Olga V. Gzovska. The discussion of the fates of these pieces closes with the assumption that Martinů intended to offer them to the Czech Philharmonic together with the ballad on the Böcklin painting.
