The Pilsen Conservatory with a Focus on the Violin Department

The diploma thesis "The Pilsen Conservatory with a Focus on the Violin Department" first deals with historical contexts that are connected with important violin personalities of the Pilsen Conservatory. The first part presents historical events which are linked to significant violinists of the Conservatory in Pilsen. Its aim is to present complex overview of the teachers who worked at the Conservatory from its beginning and who contributed to the high level of the Violin department with their experienced work. The thesis also focuses on the important graduates who represented or still represent the school with their pedagogical and artistic success at diverse musical events either in the Czech Republic or abroad. The second part brings interesting interviews with the teachers and the graduates of the school. Among them the most interesting are the parts where the teachers explain the methodology, which they use in their lessons. From the point of view of the oral history the teachers' memories of their beginning with the violin, difficulties during the study or their life are also very interesting.

Correlation of Talent and Progression in Violin Playing

The diploma thesis called Correlation of Talent and Progression in Violin Playing is focused on the talent and aptitude for playing the violin. In the first place, it is concerned with the general terms of talent and aptitude and their diverse definitions and it brings findings and opinions of various theorists. It also discusses the difference between these two notions. Further, it narrows its focus on musical talent and related concepts, such as musical development of children, the inheritance of talent as well as brilliance. The second part of the theoretical part deals with the specifics of talent for playing the violin and important prerequisites for the interpret successful development of interpret. The practical part introduces eight semi-structured, qualitative interviews with professional violin players about their talent and musical development. The aim was to compare the theoretical findings with the real experience followed by a summary.

Violin Teaching Methods With the Focus on the Suzuki Method and Colourstrings Method

The Diploma Thesis addresses the methods of teaching playing the violin and related teaching materials. The first part of the Thesis is devoted to traditional Czech schools, which are at the moment the most common resource material used at the Czech ZUS basic fine arts schools. I briefly introduce methodical materials intended for the education of beginners by Josef Micka and Magdalena Micková, Otakar Ševčík, Jan Čermák and Jaroslav Beran, Zdeněk Gola and Eva Bublová. The second part, being the centrepiece of the Thesis, is focused on two pedagogical methods which are non-Czech by origin - namely the Suzuki method and the Colourstrings method. Shinichi Suzuki created his method in post-war Japan and his accent in teaching playing an instrument is in the development of the potential of a person as well as the society, not really achieving true mastery in violin playing. The Thesis includes a description of its cornerstones and foundations. The last method addressed in the Thesis is the Colourstings method, emerging partly from the Suzuki method. Its author, Géza Szilvay, created it for his daughter, now a professional violinist. A System of Instrumental Education in the UK

This Master thesis describes possibilities of instrumental tuition in the United Kingdom. It focuses on curricular documents as A Common Approach and The Importance of Music - A National Plan for Music Education, further on music services - organizations which mediate music tuition and also on the system of musical examinations, which is very different than way musical exams in the Czech Republic. The thesis outlines also the topic of El Sistema, a music-educational project founded in Venezuela, in the last decade gaining considerable popularity also in Europe - especially in the United Kingdom. The thesis pays attention also to ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and its activities - creating syllables and other publications, publishing music scores, organization of music examinations and providing diplomas. In the field of music examinations the thesis focuses on Violin and Music theory. The last chapter if this thesis focuses on comparing some aspects of the instrumental tuition in the United Kingdom and a system of music schools in the Czech Republic. The conclusion brings a suggestion, how could the Czech curriculum for music schools improve.

Life and Work of Dmitrij Shostakovich with Focus on His Violin Concerto No. 1 op. 77 and String Quartet No. 8 op. 110

This diploma thesis deals with Dmitry Shostakovich and his works. Its aim is to map the life of the composer and to further characterize his two works, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 a minor op. 77 and String Quartet No. 8 in C minor op. 110. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is about composer's life in the difficult living and creative conditions of the Soviet Union of that time and about selected compositions of his. In the following two chapters, the analyzes of the two above-mentioned works and the historical context in which they were create are presented. The thesis also provides an interpretative analysis of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 a minor, which is also an interpretative comparison of the concert recordings of David Oistrach and Julian Rachlin.

Czech Folk Song in Violin Pedagogy

This diploma thesis, titled Czech Folk Song in Violin Pedagogy, discusses the use of folk songs in classes of playing the violin. It presents general information about Czech folk songs, describes their characteristics, examines the forms of their existence in the present times, and thinks about their future. The practical part surveys the problems of their use in improving musical and performance skills and introduces violin instructive literature of arrangements of folk songs. The final part shows the results of the research, through the answers of the questionnaires, the goal of which was to find if violin pedagogues of these days use folk songs during their teaching and how much they use the potential of these songs for the formation of skills of playing the violin.
