From Balkan to the West - study journey of Mr Václav Mencl in 1969

The main aim of this diploma thesis is to create critical edition of the travel journal. The author of this journal is Václav Mencl who is one of the most important historians of architecture of the 20th Century. Journals (diaries), as well as, for example, corespondence, are sources of personal nature or ego documents. They are created by one originator (an human being) and their physical form and content depends entirely on their creator. Personal journals or diaries are the most common but travel journals are also very popular. Václav Mencl kept a journal during his study and work journey, which he undertook as a professional consultant, with his colleagues from the creative audiovisual group SCARS (operating under the Art Centrum agency) across Southern and Western Europe. This journey lasted from August 14th to October 5th , 1969, and its purpose was to collect material for an audiovisual presentation prepared for the European Economic Community pavilion at the 1970 World Expo held in Osaka, Japan. During this expedition, Václav Mencl simultaneously collected and analyzed material for his upcoming work, which is entitled History of European Architecture.
