Ptinciples of semiotic analysis of comics
Přibyláková, Martina ; Nekvapil, Jiří (referee) ; Palek, Bohumil (advisor)
The first part of the thesis is concerned with the theory of comics. The author considers the concept of graphic space of comics as a basic notion of the presented theory. On the basis of graphic space it is possible to introduce the individual concepts of the comics theory, namely comics sign, comics word, comics image. The author introduces the new concept of "prototypic" comics scheme which serves as the basis for comparative analysis of an old Czech comics Rychlé šípy with modern adult comics. The concept of comics image is viewed by some theoretical approaches of pictorial semiotics (Eco, Goodman, Snesson), and Peirce's general semiotics, and film semiotics. The comics image is defined as rhytmical plural multidimensional comics structure. The thesis is concerned with its various structural dimensions and their units. In the second part, some of the theoretical concepts introduced in the first part are applied in the comparative analysis, which focuses on some devices used in a famous old Czech comics Rychlé šípy by J. Foglar, and in modern adult comics (the corpus of the chosen Czech and worldwide comics is included in the present work). The parameters for the comparison are: comics cover, graphic space, comics time, interiorisation and animisation of exterior, chromatic coding, picture-verbal...
Fantomas and The Seventh Seal - Analysis of Speech Acts
Brtáň, Martin ; Palek, Bohumil (advisor) ; Koťátko, Petr (referee)
Diploma work "Fantomas and The Seventh Seal - Analysis of Speech Acts" is a comparative analysis of dynamic sequences of speech acts performed in the movies Fantomas and The Seventh Seal. The speech acts are classified according to T. Ballmer and W. Brennenstuhl speech act classification. The structures, on which the sequences go on, revealed in the analytical process are compared. The work is divided into two parts: The first part brings about theory: Here a speech act is explained, as well as the principles on which Ballmer and Brennenstuhl have built their speech act classification. Further on, focus is aimed at relation between stimulus and response as a part of verbal behaviour and the modus and methods used in the process of analysis. The second part is empiric: The empiric findings of the structures of verbal behaviour in the movies Fantomas and The Seventh Seal are displayed in the form of Markov chains. The analysis results are presented in a description and comparison of Markov chains and as the findings of significant differences in the structures of dynamic sequences of speech acts between Fantomas and The Seventh Seal.
Sajat'-Nova. The golden age of Armenian troubadour lyrics
Kohoutková, Petra ; Palek, Bohumil (advisor) ; Vrhel, František (referee)
The goal of this dissertation is to approach the phenomenon of Armenian troubadour lyric poetry as such through a monograph on the poet Sayat' Nova and to introduce him in a European context, i.e. mainly in the light of the traditions of southern France. I have tried to show that the Caucasus region is far from being a region deserving only the marginal interest of researchers. To the contrary, its relative isolation on the one hand and the constant blending of cultures and the emergence of syncretic traditions on the other hand make the Caucasus a fountainhead of topics not only for ethnologists and folklorists, but also for linguists and political scientists. Caucasian troubadour lyric poetry developed in a somewhat different spirit and in a different form from its West European counterparts, but there are far more features in common than it might seem at first glance. In the opinion of many researchers, the troubadours of Provence (minstrels oflove) were influenced by Arabian love poetry that they encountered in Spain and during the Crusades to the Orient. Armenian ash ugh lyric poetry (ashugh is a synonym for troubadour) can also be shown to have developed under the strong influence of Persian as well as Arabian poetry. Armenian folk art tended to take its inspiration . more from local traditions, and...
