The Chinese coolies in Cuba in the third quarter of the nineteenth century

Od importu prvních čínských smluvních dělníků na Kubu uplynulo tento rok právě 160 let. Jejich přítomnost na ostrově si v polovině 19. století vyžádaly okolnosti spojené se zákazem obchodu s otroky a následně nedostatkem pracovní síly především v oblasti zemědělstvÍ. Ve své diplomové práci Čínští smluvní dělníci na Kubě ve třetí čtvrtině devatenáctého století jsme vycházeli převážně z cizojazyčných zdrojů. Mezi nejznámější postavy zabývajícími se tímto problémem nelze nezařadit předního kubánského badatele, a demografa Juana Péreze de la Rivu. Los culíes chinos en Cuba (1847 - 1880), Contribucion al estudio de la inmigracion contratada en el Caribe je velmi obsáhlá a zevrubná studie popisující čínské přistěhovalectví na Kubě od počátku provozování žlutého obchodu od roku 1847 do jeho ukončení v roce 1877. Autor podrobuje kritice společenské struktury, jež dovolily, či přímo donutily přeměnit svobodného člověka v doživotního otroka. Neopomíjí alespoň v hrubých rysech naznačit situaci čínských kuliů v Peru ani snahy Rady pro rozvoj o podporu bílého přistěhovalectví. Podává shrnující informace o Číně v polovině 19. století. Vysvětluje důvody, jež zpravidla vedly Číňany k odchodu ze své vlasti. Ve svém pohledu dělí čínské kulie do tří kategorií. Nejprve na svobodné dělníky, kteří mířili především do Spojených...

The hero and the image of nationalism in Colombia, The sculptures at "Parque del Centenario" (1883-1958). The main objective of this master thesis is to analyze and determine the relationship between the construction of the pantheon of heroes1 in Colombia and the attempt to consolidate a national identity in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. This problem is analyzed through a case study that focuses on a specific public space in Bogotá: "El Parque del Centenario". This space was built in 1883 for commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Simon Bolivar's birthdate. The research was conducted as an analysis that puts on dialogue different kinds of historical sources. Therefore, the use of images representing the monuments; maps and plans of the park and the city were; but above all, the main sources of analysis are newspapers and magazines which circulated between 1880 and 1958. The analysis of this case study is presented as a historical narrative that aims to provide relevant information about the construction and development of this public space. Processes of Integration in Latin America after the Second World War

The origins of Latin American regional integration can be found in the first half of nineteenth century, nevertheless the biggest boom of integration in Latin America have been observed during the last sixty years. Just after the World War II the Organization of American States was established followed by Latin American Free Trade Association, and many others. This thesis analyses the progress and its problems of six major processes of regional integration: OAS; LAFTA/LAIA; Andean Community; processes of integration in Central America and Caribbean; and MERCOSUR. The Thesis is complemented by brief introduction to theories of integration and by a summary of remaining processes of integration since WWII to the present.

The thesis The Attempts of Spain at Power Recuperation in the sixties of the 19th Century analyzes five actions of military and naval character undertaken by the Spanish Monarchy out of its territories roughly between the years 1858 and 1866, along with their preconditions, circumstances, course, and results. In the comparison with two actions realized or initiated by Spain as early as towards the close of the 1850s (her participation in the French intervention in Vietnam in 1858-1863, the war against Morocco in 1859-1860), an profounder attention is paid to three interventions effectuated from 1861 in the American countries which still approximately four decades before had been creating components of her great overseas empire (the reannexation of Santo Domingo in 1861- 1865; the participation in the so-called Tripartite Intervention in Mexico in 1861-1862; the naval expedition towards the South America's Pacific watersides that culminated in Spanish-Peruvian controversy of 1864 and afterwards, in the so-called First Pacific War, managed in 1865-1866 by Spain against the South America's Pacific republics, primarily against Chile and Peru). Migration from Surinam and Antiles into Netherlands

V posledních desetiletích se stala velice aktuálním doslova globálním evropským politickým problémem otázka migrace a s ní souvisejících témat, zejména integrace migrantů do většinových společností cílových zemích. Migrace neboli pohyb osob je sice záležitost "stará jako lidstvo samo", ale až v poslední době se začíná s jejím systematickým studiem. Významnými články novověkého migračního řetězce jsou Evropa a Amerika, jejichž dějiny jsou s tématem migrace od 15. století neoddělitelně spojeny. V souvislosti s koloniálními tendencemi evropských velmocí probíhala od 15. století nejprve migrace z Evropy na americký kontinent, v souvislosti s hospodářskými zájmy evropských velmocí docházelo i k plánované mezikontinentální migraci pracovních sil mezi Afrikou a Amerikou (dovoz otroků) a později i mezi Asií a Amerikou (dovoz smluvních pracovních sil). V souvislosti se zásadními geopolitickými změnami, ke kterým došlo ve 20. století (s dekolonizací a s vzestupem významu USA), směřovaly migrační proudy z bývalých jihoamerických kolonií do Evropy anebo na vyspělejší americký sever. Právě problematika mezikontinentální mIgrace mezi Evropou a Jižní Amerikou v postkoloniálním období se pro mne stala výzvou a zaměřila jsem na ni pozornost i při výběru tématu pro svoji diplomovou práci. Josef Ladislav Erben and his view of America

Josef Ladislav Erben (1888-1958) se zařadil v první polovině dvacátého století mezi důstojné pokračovatele slavných cestovatelů naší země. Kromě Antarktidy se dostal na všechny kontinenty, z nichž nejdůkladněji poznal a procestoval Austrálii a Jižní Ameriku. Do povědomí občanů nového Československa se zapsal především svými cestopisnými reportážemi zasílanými z cest, přednáškovou činností během dvou svých krátkých návratů do vlasti, a také čtyřmi cestopisy z Jižní Ameriky. Cestovatelům nepříznivé politické klima v Československu po druhé světové válce mu nakonec znemožnilo návrat do vlasti, kde se na něj pomalu zapomínalo. Až 28 let po Erbenově smrti v dalekém australském Melbourne oživil jeho památku ve vlasti významný český australolog Stanislav N ovotný sestavením knihy, zachycuj ící především Erbenovy osudy na australském kontinentě, nazvané Půl století světoběžcem. Jinak se ovšem oJ. L. Erbenovi u nás mnoho nenapsalo (j en několik popularizačních článků) a širší veřejnosti je dnes již téměř neznámý. Proto si troufám říci, že máme stále vůči tomuto cestovateli, sběrateli a vlastenci jistý nesplacený dluh.

František Alexander Elstner and his view of America

Ve své práci jsem se snažila zachytit Elstnerův život a postihnout celé spektrum jeho činnosti. Nejprve jsem se zaměřila na Elstnerovo dětství, dospívání a studia, poté jsem však chronologickou linii opustila a pro lepší orientaci jsem se dále věnovala jednotlivým oblastem Elstnerova života. Zabývala se jeho vztahem k motorismu, pedagogickou a přednáškovou činností i celou literární tvorbou (tj. jak žurnalistickou produkcí, tak psaním odborných, cestopisných a dětských knih). Vedle toho jsem se také pokusila blíže zmapovat a charakterizovat Elstnerovy cestovatelské podniky, jejich historii, vývoj a motivy. Vzhledem k zaměření mého studia jsem se soustředila zejména na Elstnerovy americké cesty. To znamená na expedici s názvem "Sto dní v malém voze", kterou podnikl spolu se svou ženou Evou v roce 1936, a na dálkovou jízdu Jižní Amerikou, kterou spolu uskutečnili o dva roky později.

The doctoral thesis The Argentine Army as an Economic Factor focuses on civil-military relations that are key to understanding the history, the development of modern society, and even the reality of current Argentina. The main myth that characterizes Argentine history is that the interruption of the development of the democratic processes is due to military interventions. Both in Argentine society and in the international sphere, there is a purely negative opinion about the Argentine military, in particular related to the shock caused by the last military dictatorship. This sentiment still permeates the cultural and moral face of society. This paper offers another vision of the Argentine military and tries to contribute to overcome an overly simplified perception and the prejudice that derives from it. The first part of the paper examines the emergence of military power and the characteristics of the political system in the first half of the 20th century. This section points out the causes for which the Army overstepped its specific functions and entered into the political life of Argentina. "Four Voyages of Christopher Columbus - their Importance for the Exploration of the New World" is the paper that presents and appreciates the questions of the overseas discoveries from the earliest times till the first period of the European colonisation of the African, Asian and American continent. The main aim of the paper is to recapitulate the four voyages of Christopher Columbus and the other ones of his contemporaries till the age of the beginning of the Spanish conquest of the New World in 1509. The first part of the paper is focusing principally on the infancy of the overseas discoveries at the ancient era and the middle Ages. The chapters discuss the discoveries of the ancient Phoenicians, Hellenes and Romans, the first successful European attempt to reach the American continent made by the Vikings, the voyages of the missionaries reaching the Far East, the voyages of Marco Polo into the empire of Grand Khan and the voyages of the other European and Arabic travellers of that era. The questions of the formulation of the geographical attitude to the world shape in connection with its progressive discovery and exploration are also discussed in that part of the paper.
