Self-concept of Contemporary Czech Sports Journalists

The profession of sports journalists, according to the literature, is in various ways outside the standards of journalistic practice. The content, form and importance of their work is often questioned. Sports editorial offices tend to work according to rules that are not typical of the rest of the media; they operate in a 'world of their own'. This dissertation reveals how sports journalists themselves perceive their profession. The qualitative research, based on in-depth interviews with former and active sports journalists from different types of media, describes their work in general terms and highlights the unique features of the profession that might enlighten their position in the journalistic hierarchy and identify any specifics that the journalists themselves perceive as relevant. The grounded theory method has been used for the analysis, through which the thesis defines the central and other major themes that resonate in and out of academia and co-create the image of sports journalists. Evolution of the media coverage of Alberto Contador

The thesis examines the media image of Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador in the Czech online news servers iDnes.cz, Sport.cz and iSport.cz. Through quantitative and qualitative content analysis, the thesis summarizes the development of the media image of Alberto Contador over the years. The theoretical part focuses on a more detailed description of Contador's career with an emphasis on the controversies related to doping. The practical part uses quantitative and qualitative content analysis to examine Contador's media image between 2010 and 2012, during which his doping scandal was exposed. The results show changes in Contador's media image during the period under study, with an emphasis on the impact of the doping scandal. The thesis reports on the transformation of Contador's media image during these years, which was significantly influenced by a number of factors, in particular his doping scandal.

Echoing political ideologies? A Critical Discourse Analysis of the 'Os Pingos nos Is' Coverage during the 2022 Brazilian Elections

The importance of ideology and political discourse in driving voting behavior in democratic societies has become a central concern in research. In this context, journalism plays a critical role in how electoral information and ideological positions are disseminated and shape public opinion. Given polarization tendencies in countries like Brazil which undermine the legitimacy of the electoral process, the role of journalism in democratic societies has been increasingly put into question. Especially during political elections, where people rely on information to make informed decisions, the discursive power of journalistic content holds the potential to affect people's voting choices. This thesis, therefore, aims to investigate the ideological positions conveyed in Jovem Pan's show 'Os Pingos nos Is' during Brazil's 2022 presidential runoff campaign. The research adopts a qualitative approach and uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze five selected videos from the show on YouTube, focusing on the dominant discourses and themes. "These are citizens of our country. We are their servants." A case study of Pierre Poilievre as an example of growing Canadian populism within the framework of Cas Mudde's scholarship

As scholars who have studied populism in the Canadian context have noted, Canada has previously held a false sense of immunity to the rise of populism due its multiculturalism that was seen as a barrier for the traditional xenophobic and culturally exclusive values of populist politicians in other Western democracies. Forms of populism that have arisen in Canada have taken the form of "neoliberal populism", an ideology rooted in fiscal conservatism and the belief that less government intervention is better. However, the election of Pierre Poilievre as leader of the Federal Conservative party has indicated a shift in the political spectrum, that populism is gaining traction on a mainstream level. As Cas Mudde has written about in his literature on populism, the mainstream media play an active role in shaping the discourse around populists, often giving them more air time due to their sensationalist behaviour that make for viral soundbites. So how has the Canadian media responded to Poilievre, and how does the political alignment of media impact the coverage he gets? This study will seek to answer these questions and provide insights into how the Canadian media may contribute to further political polarisation in society.

Danish journalists in Central and Eastern Europe: Work, motivation and role perception

Foreign correspondents act as gatekeepers to our world and their output can be influential. This study examines the motivations, work and role perceptions of Danish journalists who report on Central and Eastern Europe. For this study 10 semi-structured interviews with different types of correspondents were conducted in March 2023. Bourdieu's field theory was applied to understand the practice of journalism: how these journalists interact in the field and what they perceive as the "rules" of the game. This study shows that personal and idealistic motives drive the journalists. The journalists experience a high degree of autonomy, which according to Bourdieu equals power and is considered the ultimate endgame for journalists. This study finds that the journalists see their role as "curators" or "observers" that report as objectively as possible events in Central and Eastern Europe. Thus, they ascribe to very traditional values of journalism and role perceptions. In a prestigious field like foreign correspondence, one could assume that the struggle for power is intense. However, this study finds that even though the journalists possess very different positions in the field, they ascribe to similar ideals of journalism and do not challenge the field.

Media imperialism and its possible influence on identity perception: The case of Lebanese youth

Western media imperialism in the Global South has long been a discussion in media studies. Lebanon, a country in the Levantine region, is often characterized by its conflicting Arab and Western identities. This study investigates whether the domination of Western media in the entertainment industry plays a role in shaping the cultural identity of the Lebanese youth towards a more Westernised one. The study uses a cross-sectional survey of 140 respondents aged 18-25 from five main universities in Lebanon. The study analyses the collected data through descriptive and inferential statistics. The study reveals that the higher the consumption of Western entertainment media, the weaker the fulfillment with local culture on the one hand and the higher the identification with Western culture on the other hand. In addition, respondents who have high consumption of Western entertainment media tend to adopt Western cultural preferences of wearing Western fashion, listening to Western music, and being fluent in both Arabic and Western languages at the same level. I belong on the pitch: Stories of women who are changing the face of Czech football

In this bachelor's thesis, with its practical part being a radio documentary, I examine the significant issues faced by women in Czech football and how they are perceived in society. The theoretical part contains an analysis of various aspects and obstacles that women in football tend to face, including their media portrayal, inadequate representation, and insufficient funding for women's football. To accomplish this, I will use academic literature and freely available online resources such as articles and interviews. The practical part is based on testimonies from women working in different structures of Czech football, accompanied with insights from experts. The goal of this thesis is to initiate a discussion on the position of women in football and the persisting gender inequalities within the realm of sports.

Critical discourse analysis of #metoo press coverage in Quebec

In 2017, the #metoo movement lead to the denunciations of public and private figures around the world. In the aftermath of the movement's various waves, media coverage of sexual assault gained considerable traction due to the popularity of the movement. In Canada, journalists gave voices to the victims, while exposing the abusers. Quebec stands apart from the rest of Canada, due to its historical and social context. Based on a social construction and critical feminism approach, media coverage in Quebec newspapers at the time of the first #metoo wave in 2017, as well as its successor in 2020 was analysed. This study shows that there was an evolution in the newspaper coverage of the movement between 2017 and 2020. Journalists were dealing with two different types of waves, which reflected in their coverage. Between both time periods, media coverage of the victims' public denunciations led to increased indignation towards rape culture, heightened concern about cancel culture, a need for better education and criticism of the justice system. Post-colonial discourse in Spanish-speaking media: Framing of October 12th in Spanish and Mexican newspapers

In the aftermath of colonial relations, the vestiges of colonialism persist in contemporary societies, manifesting themselves in spheres such as economics, politics and culture; and perpetuating inequalities between nations. The commemoration of October 12th illustrates this issue. This date marks the arrival of Columbus in America in 1492 and is celebrated as Spain's national day and in former Spanish colonies throughout the Americas. However, the celebration has faced increasing criticism due to its colonial origins. This research employs a qualitative news frame analysis to investigate the framing of October 12th celebrations in Spanish and Mexican newspapers from 2012 to 2022. The analysis reveals a predominantly critical perspective in the portrayal of the celebration, leading to increased polarisation around the event. The presence of colonial discourse, which glorifies the colonial era and exempts the colonisers from past wrong doings, has been identified and is more prominent in Spanish publications. By shedding light on the framing of the October 12th celebrations, this study contributes to understanding the persistence of colonial legacies in the media.
