Factors Influencing Dependence on Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances in Youth
Brotánková, Tereza ; Miovský, Michal (referee) ; Chrz, Vladimír (advisor)
This thesis concerns the problems of the juvenile drug-addicts, who were ordered preliminary ruling or undertaking in-patient treatment by the Court. The object of the thesis involves realization of the configuration of the factors, which has led to drug abuse by six juvenile persons. Furthermore, it points out the possibilities and risks of intervention from the state authorities and institutions in case of occurance of behaviour disorder and negative phenomenons of the social development of a child. From the methodological point of view the matter concerns the qualitative approach whereby the methods of gaining of the data have involved interviews, work with the documents and observation. The data have been analyzed by means of descriptive approach, the method of creating of the tufts and the method of retrieval and distinguishing of the relationships. The interpretation has run in three phases. The first phase involved processing of the collected data in order to distinguish the basic categories and subcategories of the analysis, during the second phase the whole life-experience of the juvenile drugaddicts in the form of the case study has been performed, during the third phase the case studies are being discussed with the existing "Profiles" of the drugaddicts. What impacts had new drug low on illegal drug users?
Miovský, Michal
Qualitative part of PAD project had three substudies. Two of then focused on illegal drug users and proffesionals from the area health and social care. The main goal of this substudies was identify all potentional changes of risk behaviour on the different levels in drug users population and potentional changes in entrance or drop-out from social and health care. Second area for analysis was the identification of changies on the black market, changies of police behaviour (and strategies) and other institutions. The crucial point was cinfirmation of refute the ralation between changies and new drug low. In both of this substudies was dominant qualitative methods and technics. As a nomination technique was used Snowball sampling and for data collection semistructured inetrview, observation and estimation technics. This methods was used in the framework Rapid Assessment methods (WHO 1998).
Qualitative research in social Science
Čermák, Ivo ; Miovský, Michal
Publication is the second in sequence of publications from conference about qualitative research in social sciences. This conference (in 2002) was organized according to first conference organized in 1999. The organizers of the conferences plan to hold this short tradition of meeting for professionals in the field of qualitative research with biennial frequencies.
Qualitative research in human sciences at the threshold of the third millenium
Čermák, Ivo ; Miovský, Michal
The collection of papers is focused on qualitative approach to the research in human sciences, mostly in psychology. Theoretical and historical framework of qualitative research is articulated. Tension between qualitative and quantitative perspective in research is reformulated - continuum of cooperation is more useful version of research in human sciences. Several particular qualitative studies concerning family, drug-abuse, and process of therapy, etc. are presented. The specific qualitative methods - grounded theory, focus group, rapid assessment - is also demonstrated as a useful tools in research studies.
Research design of qualitative part of PAD project
Miovský, Michal
The author presents the research design of project PAD. The main goal of Goverment research project PAD is assessment of effectiveness of the drug legislation context change - new drug low, that started in spring 1999. This project has two parts with different metho-dological frameworks: a) methodology of Cost of Illness, espesially Cost and benefit method, b) qualitative research methods, particularly Rapid Assessment (WHO), Grounded Theory etc. In the paper is argued that the implementation of Cost and benefit and Cost of illness is not possible without results coming from qualitative part of study. Supervisor of the qualitative part of the project is professor Bruce Bullington from the School of Criminal Justice (Florida state univerzity, USA).
Is the ethic discourse in the research only an empty word?
Miovský, Michal ; Čermák, Ivo
The authors deal with ethic problems in qualitative research. They argue that ethic dimension in research in the field of human sciences is constantly marginalized. The problem is demonstrated on the examples of relationship between researcher and his participant, between researcher and donators, and as well as between researcher and society. The argumentation is focused on responsibility of researchers. The results of underestimation of ethic issues in research could lead to politization of scietific resarch, to political and economic influence on research orientation, to the way, how the research question is raised, to choice of research methods, etc.
Nead 2000: Tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs among high-school students
Miovský, Michal ; Urbánek, Tomáš
During the January 2001 an extensive research project NEAD 2000 was finished which focused on alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs abuse in the population of secondary school students. This project consists of 31 regional school studies each based on the representative sample of subjects. Besides basic epidemological indicators and psychosocial characteristics of participants (related with drugs use), the NEAD project is one of the basic sources of important indicators needed for local official antidrug policy. On the other hand, this project is very important for planning and implementing of new primarily preventive programs at secondary schools.
Cannabis Users in the Context of Treatment Demand Indicators
Šťastná, L. ; Miovský, Michal
The increase in cannabis consumption in the past decade has created a need for continuous monitoring of risk behaviour indicators and a need for better prediction of this development in relation on the future demand for conselling and treatment interventions. A specific position among these indicators is occupied by the Treatment Demand ů TD, showing the total number of users in treatment for the period in question, and the First Treatment Demand Indicator ů FTD, showing the total number of individuals demending treatment for the first time in their lives for the period in question. In addition to providing a summary of these indicators in the Czech Republic, the authors deal with the secondary analysis of the data collected by means of a qualitative study using the focus-group method. The study focused on the service providers who reported the highest numbers of treatment demands for the year 2002.
The qualitative approach in modern research of addictions in Czech Republic during 1990s
Miovský, Michal
The development of qualitative approach and methods in research of drug users and drug use was during 1990s very rapid. It is impossible to provide a summary of this approach and methods in the Czech Republic unless we describe wider contexts of development of science in our country in the second half of the last century. Influence of communist ideology on science was obvious in many disciplines. However, the field of humanistic studies suffered the most. Under the communist regime, qualitative approach was not officially discussed in universities, and it was regarded as unscientific. Therefore, apart from a few exceptions, officially published scientific studies that made use of qualitative methodology have only started to appear in 1990s.
