Sexual minorities and their communities in Republic of Korea

The main aim of this thesis is to present the minority sexual orientation as a sociocultural phenomenon in the Republic of Korea. After a brief introduction regarding history and general culture, the thesis will focus on community movement of the members of sexual minorities as a specific subculture of modern society, from the formative beginnings all the way to the present. The next part is dedicated to the influence of the internet and related changes in the lives of the minorities. Then the thesis will look deeper into the situation of social movements which means it will present the main interest groups and organizations not only fighting the societal prejudice against homosexuality, but also defending the rights of sexual minorities. This particular part will also pay attention to the lives of the members of sexual minorities within university community at selected Korean universities. The thesis will also introduce socio-cultural events, such as festivals. The final part will focus on legal provisions of sexual minorities and their image in the entertainment industry. Considering the focus of this thesis, the point is mainly to gather and organize available information into a coherent and structured whole.
Techniques and symbolism of decorating of court clothing focusing on women's clothing of Choson period

This diploma thesis deals with techniques and history of traditional women's court clothes' decorating during the Choseon dynasty, and at the same time it deals with symbolism of motifs portrayed on these clothes with the use of these techniques. Simultaneously, it's aim is to analyze selected preserved garments of that time and illustrate the mentioned techniques and motifs on them.
Korean Wave and its impact in Japan

The purpose of this thesis is to examine a new phenomenon of South Korean popular culture known as the Korean Wave (Hallyu) and its spread across East Asia, particularly Japan. First chapter analyses South Korea's historical and political background which lead to the emergence of this pheonemonen, and also examines Japan-Korea relations in the past century. It explains the meaning of Hallyu and how this term was first used. Lastly it focuses on the spread and reception of Hallyu in East Asia. The next chapter focuses on South Korea's soft power and gives examples of Hallyu being used as soft power by Korean governement. The third chapter describes the spread and reception of different contents of Hallyu in Japan with focus on Korean drama. Last chapter deals with different types of anti-Hallyu and anti-Korean sentiments in Japan that has emerged after the spread of Hallyu, namely an anti-Korean Wave Manga Kenkanryu and an establisment of Zaitokukai organisation.
Homoerotic Tendencies in Fanfiction and RPG in the Environment of Czech and Slovak K-pop Fandom

This thesis aims to explore homoerotic tendencies in the environment of Korean popular music fandom. The research will mainly focus on Czech and Slovakian K-pop fans and the connection between the homoerotic phenomenon and other similar genres (such as yaoi and slash) will also be discussed. This paper emphasizes the importance of the Top/Bottom hierarchical dichotomy presented in gay relationship imagined and produced by young women. We will also look at what we call a heteronormative projection and what role this issue plays in our topic. The thesis is divided in two sections - the first section examines the fandom from the historical point before stepping into a more detailed view of fan communities of K-pop, slash and yaoi on the international scale; the second part has been dedicated to personal online research in the environment of K-pop fandom in Czech Republic and Slovakia. The respondents consist of gay fanfiction writers and readers or Role-players of virtual gay characters. This research has been conducted within two levels and therefore contains qualitative results, as well as data collected from the quantitative questionnaire. A glossary explaining unfamiliar terminology has been added to the end of the contents.
Structural elements of Korean musical drama p'ansori

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe textual structure, origins and histories of Korean musical drama p'ansori. Thesis is broadly divided into two parts. The first part focuses on origin and development of this genre from the 18th century until modern age and the unique training methods did by kwangdae singers. It is followed with a part about performance and related genres and musical part which consists of rhythm cycles changdan and melodic modes cho. Second part deals with particular p'ansori works. I briefly mention contents of all twelve original stories and subsequently I analyze various texts of Chunhyangga and Simcheongga with effort to capture contents differences in each version. Deaf Culture in Republic of Korea

The aim is to focus on development of Deaf culture in the Republic of Korea. The thesis focuses not only on hearing impairment and the distribution of hearing loss categories from a medical point of view, but also the Deaf community and the importance of their own identities, which played a major role in the Deaf culture. It will also point to changes in Korean majority society's view on the Deaf community, and what caused Korean society's view to change. The part of this thesis is also focused on the history and characteristics of Korean sign language, which is considered to be the mother language of the deaf, methods of educating the deaf and the various alternative ways of communication that educators have developed and compared to education in Korean sign language. Military Prostitution and its Organization in Colonial Korea

The aim of this work is to describe the issue of military prostitution during the colonial period in Korea. After a brief introduction and terminological and methodological definition, which will define further considerations discussed, paper describes the historical background of military prostitution in colonial Korea. A description of the socio-economic consequences of the historical development with focus on specifics of military prostitution in Korea, resulting from historical and socio-economic context will follow. The work also outlines the issue of legal and illegal prostitution and its place in Korean history in the context of the colonial period. After the theoretical part, the task is to present context, the work will elaborate the issue of military prostitution, focusing on the description of the structure and organization of military prostitution during the Japanese occupation of Korea from its beginnings until its formal repeal, respectively. Korean in internet communication

The aim of this thesis is to analyze Korean internet communication language (ICL). The new language variety, which is a product of online communication and differs from both writing and speech as traditionally understood. In the first part, I illustrate the development of the internet and outset of notable web domains in South Korea. I also present the demographics of Korean netizens and data related to the internet usage. In the second part, I depict the salient linguistic characteristics of Korean internet communication language. I define ICL as a type of new slang - written slang and I also compare this sociolect with traits of spoken and written language. Lastly, I explain various factors, whose impact led to the outbreak of this recent language form. In the third part, I scrutinize distinctive features of Korean ICL, which diverges from standard language form in syntactic, orthographic, morphological, lexical and discursive perspectives. The examination is based mainly on written data collected from casual online situations. In the final section, I explore the profound influence of ICL on people's everyday communication. In other words, I portray the evidence of how this contemporary slang is affecting other language varieties in offline situations.
Sinokorean lexicon in modern Korean

1 TITLE: Sino-Korean Lexicon in Modern Korean AUTHOR: Vladislava Mazana DEPARTMENT: Institute of East Asian Studies SUPERVISOR: Mgr. Tomáš Horák, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This diploma paper is focused on morphological aspects of the Sino-Korean lexicon in modern Korean, the main topics are Sino-Korean word-formation and Sino-Korean classification of parts of speech. Hereby considered are the typological differences between Korean, an agglutinative language and Chinese, an isolative-polysyntetic language. The problem with Sino-Korean words is their ambiguity and vagueness, they appear in various grammatical and syntactical functions with their form unchanged. One morpheme can simultaneously function as an affix and root. This paper analyzes forms of function units, it deals with ways of word-formation (composition and derivation). The ways of prefixation and suffixation are researched. Based on the results of this analysis an adequate classification of Sino-Korean parts of speech is aimed to be established. Both the original Korean and the Chinese systems of parts of speech are taken into account but neither of them corresponds with the characterics and functions of the Sino-Korean words.
