Korean game industry in the 21st century with focus on the player base

The aim of this thesis is to map the korean gaming industry in the 21st century, it's comparison with countries in the region and a look at the demographics of the players. In the first part of the thesis I am explaining basic terms involved with the industry, genres of games and gaming platforms, continued by a summary of the korean gaming industry. The main theme of the research is the comparison with countries in the region, particularly with the chinese and japanese gaming industry. During the comparison some influential companies, game studios and important game titles representing Korea, China and Japan are going to be highlighted. The next part of the thesis is focused on the player base and professional players of Korea, again in comparison with China and Japan.
Film as a mirror of Korean history: Analysis of "new" narratives and political influences in contemporary Korean cinema

The diploma thesis deals with the interpretation of modern Korean history in Korean film production of the 21st century and its influence by the current domestic political and social situation. The analysis is focused on portraying three historically traumatic periods of Korean history - the Japanese occupation (1910-1945), the division of the Korean nation (1948-present) and the path to democratization of the country (70-80s of the 20th century). The aim of the thesis is to show how Korean films reflect given historical events and how they influence their interpretation in the 21st century. The first part of the thesis will be devoted to the definition of the relationship between history, film and politics with a specific focus on the Republic of Korea. The second part of the thesis will be focused on the three historical events already mentioned, it will introduce the reader to the historical background and elements of the controversy with an impact on the 21st century. The third part of the work focuses on the depiction of these events in Korean film production. The main goal is to illustrate new trends in the interpretation of individual events and compare them with the so-called official interpretations as presented in Korean school history textbooks. This thesis analyses popularity of Korean dramas in Japan, China and Taiwan since 1990s to the present. Since Korean dramas are part of hallyu phenomenon this topic is set in the context of hallyu and chronologically divided into its individual stages. Thesis focuses on how Korean dramas spread to Japan, China and Taiwan as well as its export during each hallyu stage. The purpose of this study is to describe which dramas were the most popular in these countries, what is the reason behind their popularity and what does the Korea eventually gain from this popularity.
Korean Ghost Stories (musŏun ijagi) in the Internet Era

Subject of thesis Korean Ghost Stories in the Internet Era is internet version of ghost stories/goedam (what I believe is a modern version of Yadam) on the corpus of published books Musoeun iyagi which are collections of such stories compiled by an author Song Junui through a web page thering. These ghost stories - goedams - are presented as real experiences of people who left their testimonies online. As such, they represent folklore in digital age in form of contemporary legends and personal experience legends. My aim is to discover, describe and understand changes in supernatural beliefs of Koreans through analysis of narratological categories of said corpus and comparing them to their predecessor. Korean Carthography - Chosŏn in Regional Context from 14th untill 19th Century

This thesis analyses Korean maps made by Koreans during the Chosŏn kingdom period from its beginning until the arrival of protestant missionaries to the Korean peninsula, which is when Korea was exposed to the direct influence of the western sciences. The first part of this thesis introduces the topics of cartography, the history of cartography, korean cartography during the Chosŏn period and the wider cartographic contexts in the East Asia region. The second part contains the analysis of the maps which depict Chosŏn in the regional context, that is, world or regional maps and maps of the border areas. The purpose of the analysis is to understand how the maps reflect Korean perception of the world and of the region Chosŏn is a part of during the time of their creation and which art genres, political relations with neighbouring countries and religious or philosophical beliefs are expressed in the maps.
O T'aesŏk's Dramatic Texts in the Context of Modern Korean Literature

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze three dramatic texts by O T'aesŏk from a literal perspective, specifically Jajŏngŏ (Bicycle), Pujayuch'in (Intimacy Between Father and Son) and Sim Ch'ŏnginŭn wae tu pŏn Indangsue momŭl tŏnjyŏssnŭnga (Why Did Sim Ch'ŏng Plunge Into the Sea Twice?). In the first part I focus on genesis and development of modern Korean drama and I compare it with the development of modern Korean literature. Then I describe three key themes of analysed dramatic texts in Korean literature. In the second part I analyse three dramatic texts using the case study method and put them into context of modern Korean literature. The Summer Olympics in Seoul with regard to Local Media Coverage

The topic of this thesis is the Summer Olympic Games 1988 which were held in South Korean capital city, Sŏul. The purpose of this study is to find out how the local media presented the Olympics, based on chosen newspapers articles. This bachelor's thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is set to introduce the political situation in the Republic of Korea. The second part is dedicated to the Olympic Games as I will describe the circumstances of South Korea being the host city and preparations. The main part belongs to the introduction of South Korean media and their coverage of the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul.
Faces of Korean postmodern literature

This work focuses on the short stories of three postmodern Korean authors: Pak Mingyu (b. 1968), Kim Yŏnsu (b. 1970), and Kim Chunghyŏk (b. 1971). The goal is to describe and analyze a representative sample of Korean short stories and, through the results of this analysis, to outline the direction of postmodern male short story creation. The theoretical part of the work examines the characteristics of Korean literature from the 1980s to the present day, Korean postmodern literature, and the formation of authors' literary personalities. In the practical part, the authors' selected short stories are analyzed using narratological categories, including tracing and describing the present leitmotifs. The final part summarizes the motives of individual authors and attempts to characterize Korean short story creation in the postmodern era. Morphological characteristics of the Korean dialekt spoken on Cheju, comparison with standard Korean and analysis of the Middle Korean elements

The aim of this dissertation is to describe the morphological specifics of the dialect of the South Korean island of Jeju. In 2010, the Jeju language was enlisted on the UNESCO list of critically endangered languages. This initiative led to the creation of many projects to support, protect and revitalize the Jeju dialect. Although the Jeju language is classified as a regional dialect in terms of Korean language policy, due to its incomprehensibility with the standard variety, the authorities of the Jeju Special Self-Governing province promote the designation "jejuŏ", the Jeju language. The introductory theorectical part of the dissertation introduces the reader to the issues of Korean language policy, the status of standard Korean and the regional dialects of the Korean language. In this context, the position of the Cheju dialect is described from the point of vies of language policy and from a sociolinguistic point of view. Attention is paid to the ongoing standardization of the Jeju language, as it is closely related to the current state and the development of this language. The beginnings of Classical Music in Korea

Nowadays, the Korean musicians hold the leading position in the field of western classical music worldwide. The objective of this bachelor thesis is to introduce the beginnning of the classical music on the Korean peninsula. It is a period from the arrival of the first protestant missionaries after the opening of Korea to world event in 1876 until time of the Japanese occupation. The thesis explores missionaries who spreaded christianity together with western hymns and assembled first korean hymnbooks. It introduces the muzikologist Franz Eckert, the founder of the military band and the composer of the state national hymn of the Korean Empire, and first insititutions which offered education in western music.
