Urbanová, Aneta ; Kureková, Lucie (advisor) ; Máslo, Lukáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate role of beauty on the labour market, mainly with emphasis on employment discrimination and gender differences. Existing approaches of economics of beauty and examples of experiments are introduced in the theoretical part as well as discrimination models and situation of labour market in the Czech Republic. The practical part is based on the research with online questionnaire survey. The variable of beauty consists of respondent´s self-evaluation, panel evaluation and BMI, statistically set up by summation. The verification of 7 outlined hypothesis are done through the Spearman´s rank correlation coefficient and so various aspects of beauty reward are analysed. The relation between attractiveness and wage, job finding rate, career growth rate and favouring of women with men superior was confirmed. Despite the insufficient survey sample size, which brought rather indicative results, it is possible to conclude that in the examined area with economic graduates the discrimination due to physical attractiveness is realized. Moreover, respondents stated that they consider physical appearance an important factor of success at selection procedure, so they themselves ascribe it significant value in this respect.
Analysis of the determinants of movies revenues in Czech Republic
Sejk, Ondřej ; Kureková, Lucie (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The aim of this thesis, which is based on examination of dataset consisting of 319 movies presented in Czech cinemas during period from 2013 to 2014, is to reveal factors influencing revenues of both domestic and foreign movies. Significance and magnitude of these factors is estimated by method of weighted least squares. Some significant factors influencing revenues are, for example, continuity, rating on CzechSlovak movie database or number of academic awards. Estimated coefficients show positive relation between all above mentioned factors and films revenues, as was expected. The main contribution of this thesis is recency of the examined data and examination of global topic on local level. Thanks to the latter, it is possible to compare findings to data across different countries or possibly on global scale.
Testing the neoclassical migration model: An empirical analysis based on panel data for the Czech republic
Kureková, Lucie ; Čadil, Jan (advisor) ; Mazouch, Petr (referee)
In this paper is tested validity of the neoclassical migration model. For this purpose, were used Fixed effects model and VAR model. Data contain period of years 2001 to 2010 from 14 regions of the Czech republic and dataset contains 140 observations. Empirical results of Fixed effects model show that socioeconomic determinants had signifficant influence on regional rate of migration in the Czech republic. The direction and strength of influence of the most explanatory variables corresponded to the neoclassical theory. Estimations of VAR model indicate that regional migration did not decrease disparities within regions. These results questioned validity of neoclassical migration model.
Is divorce our private matter? A draft methodology for estimating public expenditures connected with divorce in the Czech Republic
Pecka, Šimon ; Kureková, Lucie (advisor) ; Čermáková, Klára (referee)
This thesis deals with public expenditures associated with divorces in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part presents studies on the subject of marriage, domestic violence, alcoholism, divorce and quantifying the costs accompanying these social phenomena. The practical part presents areas of public expenditures in the Czech Republic that are associated with divorce, a theoretical model for calculating these expenditures and an estimate of expenditures on social support, social services and justice. Because of nonexistent data following areas are not included in the estimation: health care, police and crime. The largest amount of the estimated expenditures are expenditures on social support. This study shows that divorce is not a private institution, but it has an impact on all taxpayers of the country.
Assessing the influence of sickness benefits on worker absenteeism: An empirical analysis based on panel data
Kureková, Lucie ; Čermáková, Klára (advisor) ; Chytilová, Helena (referee)
The influence of economic variables on the probability of being absent was analyzed using longitudinal data on work absence behaviour for each day during 2006 and 2009. Panel data contain everyday information about work attendance of each employee working in the company in South Bohemia, the final sample has 43 800 observations. During the observed period, there were a number of reforms of the sickness insurance in the Czech Republic performed and such reforms affected primarily the replacement level of earnings and influenced the period guaranteeing sickness benefits for an employee. The method used by Johansson and Palme (2002) has been followed. As them, I as well distinguish between the dynamic dependence varying in the fact whether the worker is in the work presence state or in the work absence state. Empirical results show that the worker's costs arising from being absent have a significant effect on work absence behaviour.
