Lexical Characteristics of the Portuguese Language Spoken in Madeira
Kohoutová, Kamila ; Svobodová, Petra (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
The aim of the present thesis is to describe lexical characteristics of Portuguese spoken in the island of Madeira and to study proliferation of lexical regionalisms among its users whose speech is not as likely to carry dialectal traits. We first introduce the Madeiran dialects in the context of the European Portuguese variant and observe their evolution not only from the perspective of Portugal's past and present, but also the history of Portuguese linguistics. Chapter 2 focuses on describing commonly recognized characteristic traits of the Madeiran dialects on all planes of language - phonetic, morphosyntactic, and lexical. The lexical aspect comes into focus in the final part of the thesis where we present our own research regarding knowledge and use of regionalisms among Portuguese speakers in Madeira who have concluded secondary or college education. Their speech is typically perceived to be less likely to exhibit traits of dialects in comparison to their less educated counterparts. As societies develop and change however, they may play an essential role in preserving the dialects so typical for Madeira. Our research was therefore designed to find out how alive regionalisms are among these speakers.

Use of language in CMC and its impact on daily used Portuguese Bachelor Thesis Portuguese Philology Charles University in Prague Author: Kamila Kohoutová Supervisor: PhDr. Jan Hricsina, Ph.D. Abstract The present thesis concerns use of a specific language code, typical for computer-mediated communication and online environment. Such code is more often than not associated with younger generations, namely the millennials and generation Z, and have been raising worries as to what impact it might have on teenage literacy and their capacity to properly communicate. The aim of the thesis is to verify whether use of Internet by these generations indeed may influence Portuguese language in a negative way. First, we present the topic in a concise way in the introduction part and then move to describing not only the social changes, but also technology innovations, remodelling the linguistic landscape over past centuries. We further investigate the direct impact that the Internet, as a medium, has had on language genres in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 is dedicated to categorizing the characteristics of netspeak and Chapter 4 focuses on the theory of code-switching. Finally, the thesis is concluded by our own analysis of written works by Portuguese secondary school students. Key words: Portuguese, Internet, computer-mediated...
Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel and the Zohar
Kohoutová, Kamila ; Nosek, Bedřich (advisor) ; Holubová, Markéta (referee) ; Visi, Tamás (referee)
This thesis deals with the intellectual heritage of Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the Maharal of Prague and with his affiliation to the Kabbalah. The Kabbalah sprang up amongst Jewish scholars of 12th century Spain and reached its apex in the composition of the Zohar. This study shows the ways the Maharal used the Zohar and to what end. First chapter deals with the life and writings of the Maharal. The second summarises previous attempts to describe the Maharal's affinity for Jewish mysticism. The third chapter describes how the Zohar was written. It includes a textological comparison, which aims to find which edition or group of manuscripts of the Zohar the Maharal used. It also makes note of the special form of zoharic Aramaic that is present in the Maharal's writings. The fourth chapter raises the question of halakhic authority of the Zohar in the 15th and 16th centuries. Three main chapters of this thesis provide analysis and commentary of chosen zoharic texts (Zohar III,152a, Zohar III,40a, Zohar I,18a a Zohar I,33b) quoted by the Maharal in his writings and with their theological reflection. Zohar III,152a speaks about different layers of meaning implied in the text of the Torah. This chapter deals with the basic development of Jewish hermeneutics and attempts to find Maharal's place in it....
