Me, Hijra. Transgender Identity and Autobiographical Writing in Indian Context

The aim of this thesis is to analyse selected autobiographical works written by Indian trans* authors, namely A. Revathi: The Truth about Me: A Hijra Life Story, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi: Me Hijra, Me Laxmi and Living Smile Vidya: I am Vidya: A Transgender's Journey. The first part of the thesis will provide a broader perspective on trans* identity issues, including an introduction to the terminology and history. This will be followed by a section relating it to the context of the Indian subcontinent, within which the phenomenon of the hijra as a specific trans* community of the region will be largely addressed. The second part will deal with autobiographical writing. After introducing the subject and presenting the history of the genre as well as the history of its criticism, the focus will be directed towards the literary genre of autobiography as a tool of self-determination, as a means of asserting one's own identity, of gaining agency and a legitimate place in society, and other ways in which it has been used by marginalised authors. This theoretical background will be the basis for the third part of the thesis, that is, the actual analysis of the autobiographical narratives. Sakura, manga, kimono: Representation of Japan at Japanese themed events Bc. Tomáš Nezveda Abstract This thesis studies the issue of a representation of Japan at Japanese themed events in the Czech Republic. The conclusions of this thesis are based on empirical research in three essential terrains - the Japan Information and Culture Centre of the Japanese Embassy in the Czech Republic, the Czech-Japanese Association, and the Czech anime community. Each terrain's activities are analyzed to identify images of Japan they produce for their visitors. This contextual basis is built on for a further analysis of three significant issues that arise from the research - the difference and prevalence of Japanese culture in the Czech Republic, its authenticity, and the tendency of Czech fans to idealize Japan.

"MAKE THEM PAY YOU WHAT THEY WOULD PAY A WHITE MAN": intersectional feminist analysis of the book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

In this diploma thesis I analyze the book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo from intersectional feminist point of view. The author of this book is Taylor Jenkins Reid, 1st edition came out in 2017 and became popular thanks to not only social media. In the first part of my thesis I focus on overview of theory and methodology, which I work with later, such as intersectionality, gender, race, sexuality. In this context I am interested in theorizing the concepts of male gaze, female gaze and toxic and healthy masculinity. I also focus on literature and feminism and the portrayal of femininity in literature. In the analytical part of my diploma thesis, I analyze characters chronologically using the original structure of the book. My interest in analysis is in the construction of gender, race and sexuality. I focus on how the author constructs sexual and gender identity in concrete historical as well as social context and how are relationships of the main heroine constructed in this context. Gender-sensitive analysis of the novel Praskliny

The thesis entitled Gender Sensitive Analysis of the novel Praskliny looks into the representation of symbolic and discursive violence in a selected literary text by a Czech author from the perspective of gender analysis. Klára Vlasáková's novel Praskliny (Cracks) is set in a fantasy world with despotic elements, where individual heroes and heroines deal with the fundamental contradiction caused by internalized social norms with the way the protagonists themselves experience them. The analysis of the work is carried out in the context of feminist literary theories, whose main methodological and theoretical themes are the concept of a woman as nature by Sherry B. Ortner, symbolic violence by Pierre Bourdieu, and the concept of the connection between water and a woman by Z. Kalnická.

"Just Don't Be Yourself" - Discourse of Homosexuality in Czech Protestant Churches

While the majority of Czech society now holds relatively positive attitudes toward the homosexual minority, the same cannot be said of religious people. Czech Protestants in particular are a very heterogenous group in this area. This thesis is an excursion into the intersection of these two minorities: religious and sexual. It seeks to answer questions about the nature of the Czech Protestants' approach to the phenomenon of homosexuality, its history and the circumstances that have given it its current form. The main subject of the thesis is therefore the Protestant discourse of homosexuality, the study of which makes it possible to identify the basic ideological differences between religious attitudes of accepting or rejecting homosexuality. Understanding these theological and social assumptions helps to clarify key aspects of the contemporary culture wars in which conservative Christianity plays an important role.

Gender differences in reading habits among children

This diploma thesis deals with children's relationship to books and reading and, above all, possible differences between girls and boys in their approach to reading. Its goal is to find out what the reading culture is like among children between the ages of ten and sixteen. The work also aims to find out what, if any, differences there are in reading between girls and boys. This was determined through a quantitative method, namely a survey research. Respondents are children and young people attending lower gymnasiums or the second level of primary schools in various places in the Czech Republic, which were randomly selected. The main themes of the work are differences in the frequency and popularity of reading, as well as the preferences of children and young people when choosing individual books, the influence of school, family and the respondents' close surroundings on their reading habits. The work reveals the differences in reading between girls and boys and shows whether children's reading culture is declining or the opposite.
