Papršteinová, Markéta ; Šmejkalová, Jindra (advisor) ; Hrubá, Drahoslava (referee) ; Dohnal, Karel (referee)
Perception of health risks from lifestyle and work psychic load of teachers from different school levels Introduction: It is well known that the teaching profession is associated with numerous health risks. Teachers are exposed to excessive mental work and sensory stress, long working in a forced position at increased risk of noise, infections and voice disorders. Compared with the general population, there are more frequently found diseases related to occupational stress. Aim: To determine the perception of health risks arising from particular health state, lifestyle and workload of teachers from different school levels. Methods: In the context of cross-sectional epidemiological study we used an anonymous questionnaire enquiry to obtained data from 484 respondents, ranging from 201 primary school teachers, 227 teachers of secondary schools and 56 university teachers. We have investigated the presence of risk factors and their perception by teachers with regard to the school level, age and gender of the respondents. Working psychological stress was assessed by Meister questionnaire. Results: We found that many respondents were exposed to several risk factors simultaneously. Most often it was a serious illness in close relatives, and increased mental work load. This was increasingly exposed...
Nurses smoking as one of important risk factors of this profession
Drozdová, Radomila ; Kebza, Vladimír (advisor) ; Hrubá, Drahoslava (referee) ; Králíková, Eva (referee)
Smoking is a serious problem for all of society. Smoking by healthcare workers, in particular, is an even more serious problem as it affects those who are responsible for helping others quit smoking and for educating the general population regarding the consequences of smoking. It is generally accepted that if a person cannot cope with their own problems, they will have difficulties helping others cope with similar problems. This is equally true for nicotine addiction. Why do so many nurses smoke? It is not logical for nurses, smoke more than other professional groups (39% of 337 respondents) and women (about 25%). At the time of the study (2005) 75% of nurses' who smoked, smoked while at work; managers tolerated this behavior and sometimes even smoked with the nurses. This is alarming since it presents a problem of professional ethics. Occasional smokers state that, while at work, they most often have a cigarette with a cup of coffee. Most smokers report that they smoke mainly in the company of others (62.5%). Half of smokers associate smoking with drinking coffee, they also claim that smoking relaxes them (44.5%) and helps them deal with stressful situations at work. Most nurses who smoke show signs of social nicotine addiction. It has been shown that current smokers started experimenting with cigarettes...

(in English) The assessment of occupational stress and quality of life in teachers at the 2nd level of elementary schools Introduction: Problems of the assessment of occupational stress have belonged within one of the key issues of public health protection. Aim: The main goal was to comprehensively assess the extent of occupational stress and quality of life of teachers at the 2nd level of elementary schools, using salivary cortisol as a possible objective marker. Another aim was to evaluate the quality of life of teachers. Methods: We performed an anonymous survey (a cross-sectional study) in 142 teachers at the 2nd levels of elementary school (reference group) and 136 firefighters (comparison group). Rate of occupational stress was assessed by using of the Meister Questionnaire. Subjectively perceived stress was subsequently objectified by determining of salivary cortisol. For the evaluating of quality of life, we used shorter version of the questionnaire WHO QoL-BREF 26. Results: Our investigation showed that teachers perceive the level of their occupational stress was worse than in firefighters. Completed classification of mental overload reached grade 2 (health effects may be temporary), firefighters achieved of grade 1. The examination of salivary cortisol was entirely consistent with the...
Health risk assessment of chemical substances from removing of old environmental loads

Health risk assessment of chemical substances from removing of old environmental loads Introduction. Hazardous wastes from refineries stored in lagoons are old environmental loads. One way of remediation is to extract and process this waste to an alternative fuel. Emissions of harmful substances released into the atmosphere during extraction and processing of waste can negatively affect the health of exposed persons. Aim of this study was to evaluate the potential level of health risks from remediation of old environmental loads based on the detected concentration levels of selected substances in the air and to build a view of potential health risk stratification in the wider area. Methods. Among the contaminants were monitored sulphur dioxide, toluene, hydrogen sulphide and 16 representatives of PAHs (acenaphthene, acenaphtylene, anthracene, benz[a]anthracene, dibenz(ah)anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[ghi]perylene, benzo[a]pyrene, fluoranthene, fluorene, chrysene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, naphthalene phenanthrene, and pyrene). For that purpose was used combination of air pollutant concentrations and the dispersion model of substances in environment. The monitoring of contaminants was realized in the place of old environmental loads and in the nearby residential area....

Quality of life is a multidimensional concept that has been researched in many scientific fields. It has gained an important position especially in medicine, sociology, and psychology. The aim of the study was to monitor specific indicators of quality of life (QoL) and lifestyle in a representative sample of Czech children within an international study of the World Health organization (WHO), The Health Behaviour in School Aged Children: A WHO Cross National Study (HBSC), to analyze QoL in Czech children according to age, gender, and place of residence, and to evaluate it as it relates to other important factors associated with lifestyle (formal structure of the family, the amount of time spent together in the family, adaptation to school, subjectively perceived degree of demands for achievement in the school, social relationships, alcohol and tobacco consumption). The data were obtained using a questionnaire in 86 randomly selected elementary schools and multiannual secondary schools. The study methods emanated from the WHO recommendations. The target population for the research study was a representative sample of Czech children aged 11, 13, and 15, a total of 4,782 children. We monitored subjectively perceived QoL based on a subjective evaluation of the health status, the feeling of happiness, and...
