Šimková, Tereza ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee)
The purpose of this work is an interpretation of the essay Argirópolis written by Argentine author Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. This work aims to determine the aspects of the essay and the utopia in Sarmiento΄s work; the interpretation, i. e. reading of the text in wider context, integrates Argirópolis into the contexts of the essay and the utopia in order for the present work to transcend the writing΄s historical ambit and portray the timelessness of Sarmiento΄s ideas. The first part of this work examines the essayistic genre, describes its genesis and sources in Europe and Latin America. This section accentuates the singularity of the Latin American essayistic tradition and presents the basic characterization of the form of essay. The analysis of essayistic aspects of Sarmiento΄s book is based on characteristic attributes of the essay. The second part of the work is focused on the utopia. In the context of the utopia, this work attempts to elucidate why Sarmiento preferred the genre of essay to the novelistic genre, while creating a book containing utopian aspects. The last part of the present work is focused on the peculiarity of the Latin American utopian thinking and includes the analysis of the aspects of the utopia in Argirópolis.

Trčková, Helena ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
(in English) The topic of this thesis is the early novel of the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez called Leaf Storm (La Hojarasca). To provide a comparison with another book, this work also deals in brief with the author's most known novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad). The Leaf Storm is considered by the author himself as a direct predecessor of One Hundred Years of Solitude, however, they are two very different books. On the next pages I will dedicate my attention to the several aspects of the novel Leaf Storm. Specifically, I will focus on the composition, Macondo, the violence in the story, the significance of "storm" in the name of the book, the atmosphere, the novel as a modern version of an ancient tragedy, the mystery and the absurdity, the concept of the time and at last, the theme of solitude. Both novels take place in Macondo and describe similar historical events, yet they are very different concerning their composition - meanwhile One Hundred Years of Solitude is from this point of view much more traditional, Leaf Storm is considered more experimental. One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the major works belonging to the magic realism, whereas Leaf Storm is a rather realistic book. In the first author's novel we can certainly find a pattern that will be...

Music in the works of Alejo Carpentier
Bartoníčková, Lenka ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee)
As the title suggests, this thesis deals with the work of a significant Cuban writer, Alejo Carpentier, especially the influence of music on the structure and the overall tone of his fiction texts. As exemplary works we chose three of his later prose works: Manhunt, Concert baroque and The Rite of Spring. The first part of the thesis contains a brief biography of Alejo Carpentier, focusing on the writer's activities and events that would represent his relation to music. In order to get a complex image of the author's literary and musical skills, the facts are supplemented with his thoughts and actual memories. In the essential part of the thesis the three selected books are presented and thoroughly analyzed, focusing again on the presence of music in the author's prose. The chapters are divided into subchapters, in order to give the reader a well structured and understandable definitions and analysis of the particular musical elements that are integrated into the books. Thus, in the chapter dealing with the book Manhunt we introduce the sonata form, give the reader its definition and demonstrate the use of the sonata form as a literary composition pattern in the text. Similarly the role of Beethoven's symphony, Eroica, is discussed, as the characters and structure of the book reflect the themes and design...
