The butoh phenomenon, its origin, spread and influence on European dance scene

This master thesis deals with the phenomenon of Japanese modern dance art called butoh. It approaches its inspiratory influence, socio-cultural background and the conditions of its rise. It follows its development within three generations of Japanese dancers. It discusses the issue of spreading butoh beyond frontiers of Japan and the reactions of accepting this new artistic movement in Europe. It also gives an outline of this phenomenon in Bohemia and its influence on both European and Czech dance scenes.
Dance as a phenomenon of life - its meaning and function in Balinese society

This master thesis discusses dance as an important phenomenon of Balinese culture. The expression of dance is analyzed from different perspectives ? from the view of the important phases of development in Balinese history - the prehindu epoch, the hindu-javanese epoch and royal courts, the small principalities with the arrival of the Dutch, and the 20th century. The next chapter depicts the specific form of Hinduism found in Bali and some of its philosophical ideas as portrayed in dance. The following chapter illustrates the temple system, the place for dance, the spiritual preparation of the dancers, the structure of ceremony, the social organization banjar and the dance school system. The last theme discussed is the function and meaning of contemporary dance within Balinese society.
Development of non-professional scenic dance 1945 - 1968

This master thesis surveys historical development of non-professional art of dance in the Czechoslovak Socialistic Republic during politically complicated era after the Second World War. It follows trends of scenic dance and dance education, initially influenced by social realism and subsequently by the arrival of jazz and modern dance techniques. It summarizes facts about organisational provision of non-professional activities in the field of art, including the system of displays, festivals and competitions. It brings an outline of the state of dance education in the area of spare-time activity. Thus it allows to look into the era that is stigmatized by today?s prejudice caused by the same black and white vision for which the era itself had been noted.

Bachelor?s work called The choreographic style of Maurice Béjart shows a life and work of this French choreographer and also of some of his closest co-workers from companies and schools that Béjart himself founded. In certain chapters I deal with the biography of Maurice Béjart, the companies and dancers, schools and their distinctive teachers. In my work I also present a list of Béjart? s works for theatre, film and books dealing with his life. I also add a necessary index of the companies of Maurice Béjart, his choreographic and literary works (all in chronological order) and the awards he received. I finish with the characteristic of the choreographical style of Maurice Béjart.
Dramatic method of Jiří Kylián´s work

This bachelor thesis discusses five performances created by Jiří Kylián (L?enfant Et Les Sortileges, The Soldier?s Tale, Kaguyahime, Tantz-Schul, One of a Kind). First chapter contents short information about choreographer?s life. Each choreography is analyzed in the following chapters. Every chapter contents information about the date and place of premiere, the author of music, libretto, stage design, costume and light design. The main interest targets the dramatic line of the performance. Especially if some crucial moments are visible, how many dancers are there in the performance, creation and usage of stage and stage properties. Choreographic creation is also described. I compared these titles with focusin on the evolutin of choreographers work with elements described thereinbefore.
Dance Music of Nicola Matteis junior

The Dissertation "Dance Music of Nicola Matteis junior" works out not very known area of scenic dance music in baroque operas of Viena 's Courts composers in the first half of the 18th century. Main purpose is to introduce dance artwork of the recognized composer Nicola Matteis junior and to set it into the historical background. It mentions about the cultural course of events at the imperial court in Vienna. It also informs about the lives and works of those composers and libretists, who are authors of operas containing Nicola Matteis 's dance music. It tries to proof, that dance had very important place in baroque opera as equal partner to music and singing.
Dance writing in Bohemia 1925-1939

This bachelor thesis deals with dance writing in Bohemia between years 1925 and 1939. During this period, the specialist theoretical reflection of dance developed, especially thanks to two main personalities - Emanuel Siblík and Jan Reimoser. Individual chapters deal with particular period journals, such as Divadlo, Rozpravy Aventina, Útok and Klíč. The occurence and number of all texts concerning dance is described and compared, as well as their content, scope and individual style of authors, writing about dance. Separate chapter deals with periodicals specialising in dance (Živý tanec, Taneční listy and Taneční revue). The thesis therefore represents an insight of theoretical and critical dance writing in Bohemia within various periodicals.
