The Assessment of Pain by a Nurse and the Control of Post-operative Pain

This diploma work is focused on post-surgical pain. It lays out the role of a nurse in pain assessment, factors influencing post-surgical pain and ways of its controlling. It also publishes the results of the research organized in the surgical fields of the Central Military Hospital Prague in January and February 2006. The work is structured into two large parts, theoretical and empirical one. The diploma work underlines the importance of the team cooperation of all those who participate in pain management and in individualized complex nursing care for a patient in the past-surgical time period.
Self-assessment of knowledge of nurses and paramedics in the area of monitoring and interpretation of ECG waveforms in ICU and anesthesiology resuscitation department.

This diploma thesis is focused on self-evaluation of knowledge of nurses in intensive care and rescue workers' working at ICU and AIC in area of monitoring and interpretation of ECG. The aim of this diploma thesis was to map how nurse in intensive care and rescue workers evaluate themselves in issue of ECG, at what level are their knowledge and abilities to be able to discribe what strategies were contributive for gaining knowledge and what motivation did they have and what barriers they had to face. Quantitative research took place by means of anonymous questionnaire survey. In total, there were 120 respondents from population of nurses in intensive care and rescue workers working at ICU and AIC. As emerged from the questionnaire survey, nurses in intensive care and rescue workers who were included in this survey, evaluate their ECG knowledge on average. Those who passed certificated course of ECG evaluate themselves above average. Respondets said that they must be able to evaluate ECG curvve in their job and it belongs to their competence. It is evident from survey, that they do not have or they do not know they have nursing standart for ECG, and if they have then they get and evaluate acoording to this standart. Practical use of the document "The Adaptation Process Plan for Nurses in Intensive Care Unit" in the Czech Republic and its comparison with the practice in the United Kingdom

The Adaptation Process Plan document should serve as a tool for ensuring that the adaptation process of a new employee to an intensive care unit is properly led. It is also supposed to help with feedback and evaluation of the level of the newcomer's skills. The main goal of this thesis was to find out how effectively the Adaptation Process Plan document is currently used for nurses in intensive care units in the Czech Republic. We furthermore aimed to ascertain how the plans are filled in, whether their individual parts are filled in on a regular basis, as well as whether the parts which have been graded as insufficient are explained again to the employee. Last but not least, we tried to compare how the document is used in the Czech Republic and in the United Kingdom. The qualitative research was carried out by interviewing three nurses who have completed the adaptation process to intensive care units - one in the United Kingdom and two in the Czech Republic. The results show that according to our research group, the Adaptation Process Plan document is not effectively used in the Czech Republic, especially in comparison with the United Kingdom.
