Characterization of Aerosol Generated by Laser Ablation for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy.

Laser ablation (LA), together with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as a detection system, has become a routine method for the direct analysis of various solid samples. The product of laser ablation contains a mixture of vapour, droplets and solid particles. All components are finally transported to a plasma by a carrier gas in form of dry aerosol that includes mainly agglomerates of primary nanoparticles. Dry aerosol can be studied by different offline or online techniques. In general, characterisation of aerosols by their particle size distribution (PSD) represents indispensable tool for fundamental studies of the interaction of laser radiation with various materials. Many works have studied PSD of dry aerosol for different samples, and different ablation conditions (Hola et al., 2010).The laser ablation was performed with nanosecond laser (193 nm) on glass and steel samples using various ablation conditions (spot size, ablation mode, repetition rate, fluence). The aerosol characterization was made first by online PSD monitoring using Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer (EEPS) simultaneously with laser ablation - ICP-MS analysis. Second, the structure of the laser-generated particles was studied off-line using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Characterization of organic compounds in PM1aerosol in Kosetice and Brno in winter season 2017

In this work, the organic compounds and organic markers used for the identification of sources of aerosols were measured. Monosaccharide anhydrides and resin acids (emissions from biomass combustion) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (emissions from traffic and incomplete combustion) were observed especially. Hopanes, steranes (traffic, coal combustion) and alkanes were next groups of analysed organic compounds.

Combination of original ACTJU sampler with water-based condensation growth unit (CGU) located upstream of the ACTJU allows quantitative sampling of aerosol particles down to a few nm in diameter. The ACTJU effluent is permanently sucked out from the sampler and online analysed for particulate water-soluble species by ion chromatography.
Source Apportionment of Atmospheric Aersol Using by Highly Time Resolved Characterization.

The effective air quality management in the heavy polluted areas has to be based on high-quality monitoring with properly designed monitoring network and targeted measurements, which provided information required to source apportionment. The study aim was to apportion sources of atmospheric aerosol based on highly time resolved data of mass concentration of size segregated aerosol, its spatial variability, elemental composition and OC/EC at three localities in the Czech Republic in the years 2008 – 2010, 2012, 2013. According to the size fractions ratio arose the importance of PM1 source apportionment because of PM0.15-1.15 mean ratio to PM10, which comprised 85 % at the monitoring localities primarily in winter. The main sources of coarse fraction in winter were coal and biomass combustion in Březno by Chomutuv a Mladá Boleslav and road dust re-suspension in Ostrava-Ravanice and Bartovice. In summer dominated soil re-suspension and primary biological – bioaerosol in Březno by Chomutuv. The dominated source of fine fraction was in winter coal combustion Ostrava-Ravanice and Bartovice and biomass burning in Mladá Boleslav. From the above mentioned results arose, that the highly time resolved data are suitable for source identification of size segregated atmospheric aerosol and enable to evaluate representativeness of monitoring station location and measurement campaign.

Monosaccharide anhydrides and resin acids (emissions from biomass combustion) were found especially. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (emissions from traffic and incomplete combustion), hopanes (traffic, coal combustion), steranes (traffic), saccharides and alkanes were other groups of analysed organic compounds.
Comparison of chemical composition of aerosol particles in emissions from combustion of wood

The work deals with the comparison of emission factors of particles, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organic markers from combustion of wood and coal in four boilers used for household heating in the Czech Republic. Combustion experiments were performed with reduced output of boilers (incomplete combustion) which showed real emissions from combustion of solid fuels in households.

Determination of dicarboxylic acids in atmospheric aerosols using ion chromatography with on-line connected preconcentration unit

A method for the fast and sensitive detection of dicarboxylic acids in atmospheric\naerosols was optimized. The method is based on the online sampling and subsequent\nanalysis with ion chromatography. The system was applied to the determination of\nDCAs in urban aerosols in Brno. The method was verified using a laboratory generated\nstandard aerosol of DCAs. A sampling of aerosol particles on parallel filter was used\nas a reference method.
