Effects of wave dispersion and attenuation in ultrasonic diagnostics of thin-wall aircraft structures

Experimental results of nondestructive ultrasonic testing of aircraft structure are shown. Wave dispersion and attenuation effects on acoustic emission and nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy are discussed. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations.

Artificial neural network (ANN) based algorithm for acoustic emission sources location is described in the paper. The algorithm uses RBF type of ANN and it was tested on complex aircraft structure.

The experimental procedures are described, based on nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy (NEWS). Special testing samples - PMMA blocks with laser induced cracks - are designed to verify that procedures. Opening of cracks enables kissing effect of their faces at relatively small amplitude of dynamic excitation which plays substantial role in Nonlinear Wave Modulation Spectroscopy method (frequency mixing) where it causes creation of side lobes in frequency spectra.

In the contribution, the new approach for conversion of signal parameters, evaluated at various transducers, to one reference location in source vicinity is described. This reduced inverse problem is solved using artificial neural networks.
