Gaining of independence of a person with intellectual disabilities

The main topic of this Master thesis is the process of gaining independence of a person with intellectual disability. This phenomenon is perceived as a lifelong process connected to the planning of future in families with an intellectually disabled member. The thesis is based on qualitative research using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. In the research, three groups of respondents were involved: people with intellectual disability, their parents and people who work with people with intellectual disability and their families. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants of the research. The studied phenomenon is described in the context of an entire life of an intellectually disabled person and their family. The research has focused on identifying the obstacles obstructing the journey of gaining independence of a person with intellectual disability. The aim of the research was to propose methods for supporting the journey of gaining independence of an intellectually disabled person and their family through complex understanding of this phenomenon.
