The Srebrenica massacre as Dutch national trauma: Discourse analysis of selected daily newspapers
Ratajová, Klára ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
Although more than 23 years have passed since the event known as the Srebrenica massacre, it is still a live topic in Dutch society. The Dutch troops who served on a UN peace mission in Srebrenica have been blamed for not being able to prevent the death of such a large number of innocent people. Moreover, the survivors of the killed Bosnian Muslims are still suing the Netherlands over compensations. The aim of the thesis is to find out who was blamed for the Srebrenica massacre by the Dutch society - the soldiers who served the mission, their commanders, the Netherlands, the international community or other sides involved. To reach the aim, discourse analysis was applied on articles published over a period of ten years in two influential Dutch newspapers - De Volkskrant and NRC Handelsblad. The time period from June 2007 to June 2017 was selected for the analysis as a number of key court cases took place during this particular period. The cases had a major influence on the development of the discourse of blame, which is studied in the thesis in detail. Apart from the analytical part, the thesis also includes a contextual part where historical events leading to the Srebrenica massacre are dealt with as well as the role of the Dutch peacekeepers.

Juhászová, Tereza ; Kocián, Jiří (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
This diploma thesis analyzes the identity of German minority in the town of Medzev (South Slovakia). The research traced the development of identity manifestation from the mid- 20th century until now. The aim was to discover what factors (historical events, homogenization politics, private motivation or randomness) influenced the representation of identity of the German minority in the local cemeteries. The cemeteries thus serve as a source of information about local German identity manifestation. The field research was carried out in 2016 and 2017 in Medzev, which is a town with symbolical value for the German minority in Slovakia. In the cemeteries the author analyzed the used language and names on the gravestones, as well as the position of the gravestones, their form and material. The qualitative research in the cemeteries was supported by biographical and semi-structured interviews with members of the local German minority. The main contribution of this project lies in the reconstruction of German identity manifestation in the local cemeteries in the course of last 70 years. Based on the results of the confrontation of mostly invariable inscriptions on gravestones with testimonies of the narrators, the ambition of the thesis is to point out how flexible and multilayered are identities in the...

Prestaš, Ivan ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
Bachelor Thesis under the title: "Neo-Ottomanism and Its Effects in the Western Balkans: The Comparison of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina" analyses the attitude of Turkish foreign policy towards Western Balkan states. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the Turkish expansionary foreign policy not only from a military but from an economic point of view. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to Turkey and how it has changed its position on the regional and world political scene. The following part deals with the development of both relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey and relations between Serbia and Turkey over the last ten years. The last and most significant chapter analyses the economic aspect of neo-ottomanism. Based on the analysis of Turkish investments in the Western Balkan states and other economic parameters (exports and imports), Turkey has been using soft power to become a major player in this very turbulent region. Using a comparative analysis of two case studies, it was confirmed that Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is one of the most important Turkish partners in the Balkans, is still in the centre of Turkish interest. However, led by recent events which resulted in the opening of the Serbian market to Turkish investors, one can observe...

The thesis studies official reports of the institutions of the European Union, primarily the Progress Reports by the European Commission. Beside other things the thesis describes the method of accessing a country to the EU and explains the process of accession negotiations with the candidate member countries. The thesis monitors the amendments to the Albanian and Montenegrin laws. These changes were made based on the recommendations of the European Union with a view of aligning with the laws of the member states of the EU.
The Bosnian Diaspora in Ljubljana
Hanušová, Tereza ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
This thesis aims at the Bosnian diaspora in Ljubljana. The thesis considers three research questions: How do members of the Bosnian diaspora in Ljubljana evaluate their life of the ethnic minority in Slovenia, how do they perceive current events in Bosnia and Herzegovina and whether they are considering their return to the country. To answer questions, the thesis uses the method of qualitative research, namely semi-structured interviews. The research was conducted among members of the Bosnian diaspora aged 18-22. Respondents were not only representatives of the second generation of diaspora, but also young migrants, who came to Slovenia themselves, mostly for the purpose of studies at the university. Theoretical part aims at the context and development in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the past 20 years, emigration from the country and at the theory of the Bosnian diaspora in Slovenia. In the analytical part I am evaluating the research. According to the research, a large proportion of Bosnian migrants experienced some kind of prejudices during their stay in Ljubljana, but they generally agree that the situation in Slovenian society is steadily improving. Most respondents said that they are worried about the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and they agree that only the young generation...
Kosovo - The Engagement of the International Community
Gregorová, Jana ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Žíla, Ondřej (referee)
The Balkans is an area where the diversity of culture, religion and ethnicity is prominent. This diversity has predisposed the Balkan region for troubled periods throughout the history. The Balkan peninsula has always been considered a very unstable territory. The bachelor's thesis deals with the Kosovo conflict in the 90's of the 20th century that escalated in 1998, the course of the conflict and the reasons of the international intervention. The conflict between two ethnic groups - Albanians and Serbs living in Kosovo - culminated in war that was attended by ethnic cleansing on both sides and ended by bombardment in Serbia by NATO forces lead by USA from March to June in 1999. The thesis introduces background history of the Balkan region and presents briefly the reasons for the hatred between the two ethnic groups, then examines the developments in Kosovo in the late twentieth century when the conflict escalated. The International Community tried unsuccessfully to resolve the conflict by diplomatic means. The thesis focuses on the engagement of the International Community, notably the UN and NATO, in the conflict in Kosovo and attempts to clarify the reasons and character of these interventions. The aim of the thesis is to answer the question what led to the engagement of the International...
The specific development of Yugoslavia after the Second World War and different views of self-governing socialism
Tylová, Kateřina ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Žíla, Ondřej (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the specific development of post-war Yugoslavia, especially about self-governing socialism which can be considered as finding the new way of socialism. This issue is closely related with historical context of post-war development. Thanks to the conflict with Soviet Union the need of settling new political system could be the way of better fitting socialism. The status of Yugoslavia was considerably more complicating due to exclusion of the Soviet sphere, however, it was a new opportunity. The aim of the thesis is to clarify how the self-governing system worked and why it was introduced. For a comprehensive view of self-government, different views on this system have been added. The first chapter deals with the historical context in Yugoslavia and the theory of the self-governing system. The second chapter deals with different views of self-governing socialism. This chapter is subdivided into other subchapters, divided by time - between the regime's theorists and historians (experts who evaluate the system with time and with the fact that it is not directly incorporated into it). The chapter with the view of historians is further divided into period historians (written in the time of the functioning of the self-governing system) and contemporary (opinions that are...

Krulichová, Zuzana ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to analyse the influence of EU conditionality on the 'Kosovo question' in Serbian policy. Its focus is on the period between 2008 and 2015. It analyses the shift in Serbian politics with the use of the external incentives model. The core of the analytical part is the dialogue held between Serbia and Kosovo, mediated by the EU. Key agreements are examined as well as the Serbian shift towards the EU membership. Moreover, the text focuses on the factors which affect the effectiveness of EU conditionality. The thesis concludes that Serbian compliance was strongly influenced by the prospect of membership. Serbia still refuses to recognize Kosovo as an independent state. Problems of Balkan Candidate Countries that are slowing their integration into the EU
Zelenková, Gabriela ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Hofmeisterová, Karin (referee)
The European Union's leading policies undoubtedly include integration policy. Since its inception, the European Union has grown several times and is now being counted With the accession of other states. It is the candidate countries of the Western Balkans that will be crucial for my analysis. In our work we will focus on discovering and analyzing the main obstacles of these countries, which are responsible for the slowing of the integration process. The problems faced by these states on their way to the European Union are numerous. Since they are states of one region, many problems are common, but despite the fact that the European Union does not form themselves as a single entity and the admission of one of the states to the European Union, that is to say the acceptance of other states as well. Although they have many problem points in common, each country has its own specific problems that slow down this integration process.
